We seek a committed and enthusiastic Head of Engineering to join an excellently resourced department at this successful and oversubscribed Specialist Maths and Computing school.  Teaching to A level is available.


Main Responsibilities: 

• Provision & resourcing of Engineering at KS4 & 5

• Consistency & quality of T&L in Engineering across KS4 & 5

• Outcomes in Engineering at KS4 & 5

• To lead and manage the delivery of the Engineering curriculum.


Additional Responsibilities:


• To ensure that there is an appropriate curriculum, in accordance with our school policy and national requirements, and that it meets the needs of all children.

• To monitor, evaluate and develop teaching and learning within Engineering in accordance with school policies.

• To be accountable for student progress by liaising with teaching and support staff to monitor and support individual children and teaching groups.

• To carry out self-evaluation across the area.

• To teach Engineering CTEC, and other subjects as appropriate, and to be part of other departmental team(s). 


Main Duties

• Strategic Planning.

o To ensure that the Engineering department is aware of, and contributing to, the School Improvement Strategy and School Development Plan.

o To complete annual department self-evaluation and action planning for Engineering.

o To ensure the curriculum stays up to date, relevant and engaging by keeping informed of changes to curriculum guidance and adapting existing practice accordingly.


• Staff Deployment and Management.

o To organise and direct the teaching of Engineering within the faculty.

o To liaise with the Head of Faculty over timetable and staffing issues.

o To ensure the Engineering team have clear guidance, support and all necessary resources to effectively deliver the subject.

o To participate in the appointment of Engineering staff with Head of Faculty and Line Manager, drawing up job descriptions, person specifications and department literature as required.

o To mentor NQTs and ITT students if required.


• Performance Management and Staff Training.

o To be a team leader; lead review meetings and organise appropriate CPD as required.


• Curriculum Provision and Assessment.

o To act as lead, expert and guide for all aspects of the Engineering curriculum.

o To develop schemes of work (curriculum plans) for Engineering that outline the subject’s intent in its planning and delivery of its curriculum (i.e. the reasons for inclusion of topics and their sequencing).

o To ensure that Engineering schemes of work meet examination criteria. 

o To periodically evaluate Engineering schemes of work (curriculum plans) and the impact they are having on outcomes, in line with the school’s Self Evaluation Policy.

o To co-ordinate the resources with which to deliver Engineering schemes of work, assisting the Head of Faculty to complete the annual capitation bid and manage the budget.

o To co-ordinate and provide school-based curriculum development on professional development days for Engineering, as required or directed by the Head of Faculty.

o To manage all KS5 Engineering courses within the Faculty in terms of:

• Analysis of examination results

• Liaison with Examination Office and examination boards re exam entries etc.

• Moderation where necessary

• Selection of examination courses


o To manage the KS4 Engineering courses offered within the faculty in terms of:

• Analysis of examination results

• Liaison with Examination Office and examination boards re exam entries etc.

• Moderation where necessary

• Selection of examination courses 


o To be responsible for the assessment, recording and reporting of student progress and attainment in line with the school’s Assessment Policy. 

o To develop departmental assessments that gauge student understanding, highlight where gaps exist in student knowledge and inform the teaching process.

o To assist the Head of Faculty by supplying Engineering specific agenda items for Faculty Meetings and holding break-out meetings of the KS5 team as necessary. 

o To monitor the quality of classroom and corridor displays with the department.


• Monitoring and Evaluation.

o Following the School’s QA framework and Departmental Self Evaluation Policy

 Analysis of student achievement and progress

 Observation and feedback

 Action Planning


• Pastoral Care and Discipline.

o To support Head of Faculty and teaching staff within the department, with the management of student behaviour and sanctioning in line with school Behaviour Policy.

o Liaison with parents as appropriate. 


• Extra-Curricular Provision.

o To organise and attend field trips / visits required as part of the curriculum

o To co-ordinate enrichment activities as appropriate.

o To organise speakers and events as appropriate. 


• Marketing and School Events.

o To provide subject / department information for the school website, prospectuses and option booklets.

o To attend Open Evenings (School & 6th Form), Parents Evenings and Option Choice/Revision Events, preparing subject displays and information leaflets as required.


General Duties:

• To carry out a share of supervisory duties in accordance with published rosters.

• To participate in appropriate meetings with colleagues and parents relative to the above duties.
