Shebbear College is seeking a dynamic, forward-thinking Head of English & Languages to lead our excellent team from September 2023. As a member of staff at Shebbear College you will be part of an ambitious, dynamic and supportive team of teaching and non-teaching staff. Shebbear College is a small independent day and boarding school of around 300 pupils, for boys and girls aged from 4 – 18. Set in 85-acres of countryside between Dartmoor and Exmoor, it is an idyllic location in which to work. Class sizes are smaller than average throughout the school and we pride ourselves on knowing every pupil as an individual, recognising their potential and helping them to achieve their best, whatever that may be. This is what makes us special and stands us apart from other schools.

We are proud to be a non-selective school with a diverse pupil body, who share an enthusiasm for life and a desire to learn. Pastoral care and wellbeing is a huge focus and what is unique about Shebbear, is that it is not just our teachers that have wellbeing at the forefront of their minds, but all of our pupils, who encourage and motivate each other, build each other up and help each other with problems. Visitors often comment on how polite and friendly our pupils are and the words ‘be kind’ really are in evidence here.

About Shebbear College

Founded in 1841 and steeped in history, Shebbear College is a thriving day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 4 to 18. Our 85-acre campus is situated in the beautiful Devon countryside, close to Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks and the fantastic surfing beaches of the North Cornwall coast.

Life at Shebbear is busy, filled with academic purpose, co-curricular activity, creative discovery and outdoor adventure - we believe in a broad, extensive education where pupils excel in all areas of the curriculum. Our talented staff and ambitious pupils together form a happy, caring community that challenges, innovates and develops a love of learning.

Our smaller size means that our staff know all of our pupils individually, enabling each child to discover their own strengths and find the confidence to shine. Every pupil is different and our team of passionate and committed teachers will find their spark and discover what motivates them, meaning that each pupil can develop their potential and feel empowered to be the very best they can be - academically, socially and morally.

Shebbear pupils consistently achieve excellent A-level, BTEC and GCSE results year-on-year.  We are proud to be a non-selective school and we believe that our pupils succeed because they are happy at school. The mix of our pupil-centered curriculum, our dedicated teachers, the individual attention and the extensive range of co-curricular opportunities on offer are key factors in this success.

At Shebbear College you will find confident, courageous, compassionate, creative, curious and courteous pupils who will welcome you with open arms!
