Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding practitioner to teach English to boys in Years 4-8. This role would suit a secondary-qualified English teacher, preferably with experience of The Common Entrance 13+ syllabus. The successful individual must be highly motivated, possess excellent organisational skills, work well with colleagues and have the ambition to further develop an inspirational and successful English Department.

The successful applicant will have:

• Excellent classroom practice with understanding of high quality teaching and learning preferably with experience of The Common Entrance 13+ English syllabus.

• Experience of implementing differentiated teaching strategies plus experience of monitoring and evaluation procedures relating to the work of pupils.

• Lively and creative personality, with a sense of humour and “can-do” attitude.

About us: Tower House is a single form entry boys’ preparatory school for 190 boys covering Reception to Year 8, we prepare pupils for the top senior schools in the UK.

We pride ourselves on providing a rich learning environment in which the boys are given time to learn about themselves as learners: – to practise the skills of thinking, debate and inquiry, to modify their views because of another’s reasoning and – not least – to listen, understand and empathise with the experiences of others.

We also place a great deal of emphasis on the development of each boy’s character and confidence – encouraging responsibility, compassion for others and a sense of humour.

We are a close-knit, supportive and happy team of staff who are all looking to learn from each other, with a mix of both NQTs and teachers further established in their career.

Location: We are located between Richmond upon Thames and Putney just off Richmond Park in East Sheen. We are an 8 minute walk from Mortlake train station (zone 3) and are well served by a number of buses. There is plenty of free street parking on the surrounding roads.

Staff Benefits: In our experience, happy teachers make a happy school. Our staff are our single biggest asset, and the success of our students depends on them.  So we take care of, and invest in them. A few of the things we offer are:

• Professional Learning Teams – like minded colleagues meeting to  discuss how to improve practice.

• free school meals, tea, coffee and biscuits

• a supportive and open management team

We really value our staff and will do whatever we can to meaningfully demonstrate that.

Here is what the Good School Guide has to say:  Reading is taken seriously and a reading wall records numbers of books read by each boy during the term. Library is enticing: jam packed with adventure books and offset by jazzy mood lighting. Every Friday morning reception boys head for the forest school where they build dens, climb trees and jump in muddy puddles. Emphasis on impeccable manners: boys are expected to shake their teacher’s hand and look them in the eye as they say goodbye at the end of each day.

Applications will be considered as they are submitted. The School reserves the right to commence or complete the recruitment process at any time prior to the closing date.

Tower House School is committed to promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children. Applicants will undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and with the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Tower House School is an equal opportunities employer.

About Tower House School

We're Small

It’s key to our philosophy. For us, small defines all of the values that are sometimes lost in larger establishments. Small gives us the time for individuals and a personal touch. We foster an independent spirit without losing the essentials of cooperation and partnership. Small is simply a kinder and more forward thinking approach. Small is what we are, but it does not limit us.

It's our ideas and achievements that are big.

Tower House is home to just 180 boys. Like a family, we understand that every child is different. Some will be faster out of the blocks than others. But we don’t give up on any child. We commit to every boy. We do this because we have no desire to turn education into a process.

We want to produce individuals. If we are doing that, we've done our job. Want to help us achieve our goals?
