Winchester College seeks to appoint a well-qualified and dynamic Head of English.
English at Winchester is taught with relish by specialists who are highly enthusiastic about their subject. Our small class sizes allow maximum opportunity for discussion and the development of individual response; no English set is streamed. At IGCSE the CAIE 9-1 specification is taught. In the Sixth Form, our candidates take Cambridge Pre-U.
Recent results in Pre-U English Literature have been outstanding: in summer 2018, over 75% of pupils taking the course obtained Distinction grades. At IGCSE (English Language) over 80% of pupils obtained 9, 8 or 7 (A*/A).
There are nine members of the Department who mainly occupy contiguous, attractive and spacious rooms at the heart of the school. The Department is friendly, forward-looking and well-resourced. The successful applicant will be expected to maintain a tradition of rigorous scholarship and dedication to the business of teaching English in a way that is both lively and effective.
The College, which was founded in 1382, is a boys’ boarding school of 700 pupils. We are committed to the highest standards of academic excellence, first-class pastoral care and the maintenance of a broad and balanced liberal education for all our pupils. Through our non-examined general cultural studies programme (known as Div) we offer an approach to education which develops an intelligent and critical awareness of the world, strong communication skills and a confident ability to think independently and with originality. The successful applicant may be asked to teach Div.
This post will suit teachers of the highest calibre who will enjoy the challenge of working with able and articulate pupils in a historic site of unparalleled architectural beauty in the heart of Winchester.
All our full-time teachers are expected to act as tutors in one of the eleven boarding houses, thereby making a significant contribution to the pastoral care of our pupils. In addition, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute in some capacity to our sports and co-curricular programme.
Further information about the school can be found at www.winchestercollege.org
This position includes a generous benefits package and appropriate housing.
