Principal Responsibilities

The Head of Extra-Curricular will oversee and manage and develop the extra-curricular provision of the College.

The post holder will be responsible for extra-curricular provision including overseeing the quality, variety and quantity of clubs, the continued development and organisation of sport across the college and the organisation of whole college events and activities. The Head of Extra-Curricular will also support staff with the planning and organisation of trips and visits. 

The Head of Extra-curricular will also support the Housemasters in developing and promoting the House system.

The post holder will have a reduced teaching commitment

Specific responsibilities include:

• Ability to teach KS4 / KS5 subjects offered at Abbey College Cambridge

• To ensure all students take an active part in the extra-curricular life of the school

• To produce the extra-curricular booklet

• To actively promote extra-curricular events throughout the school and with the wider community in liaison with the college’s marketing manager

• To monitor student involvement in extra-curricular activities and to develop opportunities for student participation in a range of different types of activity

• To manage the programme of events and trips across the school

• To oversee the organisation and provision of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme

• To act as the EVC deputy and ensure that all trips and visits are in line with College policy

• To plan, lead and develop sports’ provision across the college

• To advise and advise SLT on all aspects of Extra-Curricular

• To ensure events and activities are scheduled in the school calendar

• To regularly review and monitor the provision of co-curricular activities including the start-up of new activities and advertising of existing activities

• To monitor the quality and quantity of extra-curricular activities

• To oversee the recording of attendance at extra-curricular events

• To manage with HSMs the quality and quantity of House competitions

• To oversee the awards for extra-curricular events and sporting activities

• To manage key staff with responsibility for extra-curricular provision.

Whilst no specific experience is required for this role the post holder should have a strong track record of involvement in and support for a diverse range of extra-curricular and sporting activities. The post holder will be expected to work outside of ‘normal’ school hours

All teaching staff are expected to make a full contribution to the wider school life including extra-curricular activities and involvement in evening activities

Checks and Training

• Enhanced DBS checks to ascertain successful candidates suitability to work with children will be carried out. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, and therefore all convictions, cautions and bindovers, including those regarded as ‘spent’ must be declared.

• Online searches will be carried out on candidates for any unsuitable content by or about candidates.

• Two written & verbal references from previous employers and a personal reference will be sought.
