Job overview

Plymouth CAST is seeking to appoint an outstanding, enthusiastic and dedicated teacher to lead our Science Faculty at Notre Dame Plymouth and St Boniface’s College.

This is an exciting opportunity for a creative and superb teacher with strong leadership skills to lead Science across both our schools, promoting the subject both in curriculum teaching and through a programme of extra-curricular activities and clubs.

We expect successful applicants to show within their application, and at interview why they wish to work for Notre Dame and St Boniface, their passion for working with young people and be able to explain how they will embrace and support the Trust’s values. Applications from experienced leaders and from teachers looking to take the next step in leadership will be equally valued. The role will involve working at both school sites and leading a team of staff who also work across the 2 schools.

Notre Dame and St Boniface are Roman Catholic, comprehensive, single-sex (Girls at Notre Dame and Boys at St Boniface) schools with a mixed sixth form at Notre Dame. We value our Catholic ethos, but you don’t need to be a Catholic to apply to work for either school. We ask that our staff support our ethos and Christian attitudes.

Application forms should be submitted via TES and should be received by the closing date stated below. You will need a TES login to create an application using the 'Quick Apply' button. Please be aware all communication will be sent via the portal to the email you use for your TES account. Applicants should check their inbox (and spam folders) after the closing date for more information on the progress of their application.

The school reserves the right to close the vacancy early if sufficient applications are received to proceed to interview. Applicants are encouraged to submit applications swiftly to avoid disappointment.

The school operates a Safeguarding Children Recruitment Policy and is committed to promoting the welfare of young people. The successful applicant will be required to undertake an Enhanced DBS disclosure.

Closing date:   10am Monday 23rd May 2022

Interviews: Thursday 26th May 2022

MISSION STATEMENT

Notre Dame School is

an optimistic school promoting Christian attitudes

a school where every person belongs

a school which values learning and high aspiration

a school which rises to challenges and celebrates achievement

Notre Dame educates the whole person: head, heart and hands

Welcome to Notre Dame and St Bonifce's College! We are schools with a strong sense of tradition, a vibrant present and an exciting future.  There has been a Notre Dame School in Plymouth for over 150 years. This school is proud of its history but is forward looking. We are now working jointly with St Boniface's College to deliver single sex faith based education for students from all over Plymouth, for girls at Notre Dame and boys at St Boniface's College. We have a joint Sixth Form that operates mainly from Notre Dame.

In 1804, two French women, Julie Billiart, the daughter of a country draper, and Francoise Blin de Bourdon, an aristocrat, founded a Religious Congregation dedicated to the education of girls. From that time onwards, in Europe, America, Africa, Japan and other parts of the world, Sisters of Notre Dame have worked to keep alive the educational ideals of St. Julie.  It is a truly world wide family.  You may have heard of Sister Dorothy Stang who was murdered in the Amazon in February 2005 for the stand she took in support of the rights of poor farmers.  She is a modern example of the bravery and independence shown by the founders of the congregation.  The final sentence of their mission statement may help you to understand our inspiration:  ‘Each of us commits our one and only life to work with others to create justice and peace for all.’

St. Julie believed that education should be for all, whatever their ability.  The first Sisters were encouraged to educate “the whole child: heart, hands and head” and they were urged to teach their pupils “whatever is necessary for life.”  We have adopted this ‘head, heart and hands’ approach  to adapt our curriculum to suit every need.

Notre Dame has a strong record of academic success, and a broad and enriching curriculum that stretches the most able and supports those who need extra time.  We expect the best effort and the best standards from all our community members because we are totally committed to achievement.  We are a learning community.  We are a faith school.  We place a high value on developing spiritual and emotional intelligence in all our learning community and set aside time for this each year.

‘Notre Dame develops in all students skills of leadership and teamwork and an appreciation of the strengths and feelings of other people.’

Ofsted 2017 decided that we required improvement, particularly around middle leaders, outcomes and attendance.  Since then have revolutionised the way we lead Teaching, Learning and Assessment.  Our 6 faculty leaders monitor, evaluate and lead all curriculum areas.  We now judge ourselves to be good again and we await our next inspection to confirm this - probably in early 2019.

Accommodation

The school is set in beautiful, spacious grounds on the outskirts of Plymouth. In 2008 we opened a brand new Sports Hall and fitness suite, new library and Sixth Form facilities and a five classroom block.   In 2017 we added a spacious new dining room.  The classroom block houses History and Geography and is named after Sister Dorothy Stang.  We also revolutionised our Food Technology area so that training for catering has become a real option.  In 2013 we added a first floor extension to the Stang Classroom block.  There is a virtual tour on our website.

Students

"Students feel safe and well cared for.  They say the school supports them in their faith, which is very important to them." Ofsted 2013

There are approximately 750 students at Notre Dame; of these over 120, including boys, are in the Sixth Form.  We are part of a consortium of five schools: St Boniface’s College, Eggbuckland Community College, Devonport High School for Boys and Devonport High School for Girls.  This offers wider choice to our ‘A’ Level students.  The school draws its intake from between 30-40 primary schools across Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall.

All students are members of a tutor group.  The tutor knows the students well and provides a first point of contact for help and advice.  Student leadership is expressed through the Senior Student team (SST), Young Spiritual Leaders, Sports Leaders, Peer Mentors, Military Kids Club and Young Carers.  We have a house system with the houses, named by students, after women who have made a difference: Marie Curie, Audrey Hepburn, Florence Nightingale, Rosa Parks and Dorothy Stang.

The Curriculum

The school follows the National Curriculum.  At Key Stage 3 students are given the opportunity to work within every department.  Some subjects have mixed ability groups; others such as English, Maths and Science, have setting.  We offer a full range of options for GCSEs with as much freedom of choice as possible.   At Sixth Form level the school offers an excellent choice of ‘A’ level and National Diplomas through working as part of a consortium of five secondary schools.

We offer a good range of extra curricular activities.  The school’s harmony group, ND Chorus, has performed at events across the city.  Many sporting activities take place both during the lunchtime and after school.  The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme is well established here.  We are well known for our work on Student Voice and the Respect agenda. Every other year we offer an activities week during which students have the opportunity to choose from exciting options such as an adventure week in Bude, rock climbing, sailing, and cultural visits to countries such as Germany, Holland, Italy, Poland, France, USA and even Borneo.

As an inclusive school we aim to provide opportunities for the full range of abilities.  We seek to create an environment in which each person is valued as a unique individual.  The basis of school life is mutual respect for all members of our community.

The Staff

Teachers at Notre Dame are expert, dedicated and committed to student progress.  Our teachers are supported by an excellent, highly efficient team of support staff.  Many of our support staff have been trained and promoted in house to new positions such as learning support, cover supervision and library.  This is something we encourage.  We are also delighted to have a lay chaplain who also supports students’ leadership.

Notre Dame looks to every member of staff to support the Christian ethos of the school and to play their part in caring for the young people who come to the school.  In this, as in other aspects of life at Notre Dame, staff are helped to fulfil new commitments through planned professional development and the mutual support of colleagues.  Coaching is our approach to raising standards and sharing good practice.

You will enjoy working at Notre Dame.  Our staff consider the commitment of staff, the sense of community and the motivation of students as its greatest strengths.  Our visitors tell us that they are struck by the friendliness of our students, the quality of our learning environment and the faith ethos of the school.
