We are seeking an experienced and well-qualified colleague, with outstanding management and classroom skills for September 2018 to lead our French Department with creativity, dynamism and academic verve. Languages are at the core of the Whitgift curriculum with pupils learning three on entry in Year 7 and are encouraged to continue two of those to GCSE level. In French, we currently prepare pupils for the Edexcel IGCSE and the academically rigorous Pre-U, as well as the stimulating and refreshingly unbounded IB course. French is offered at a variety of levels including Language A for native speakers. Our unique Section Française is geared towards the French pupils at the school, focussing on teaching them the literature, which they would study if they were schooled in France.
We are a busy and thriving Faculty, constantly seeking to improve our practice and the opportunities we offer pupils. A large range of exchanges and trips are run by the French Department on an annual basis, and the promotion of French throughout the School will be a key part of the Head of French’s role. A very high proportion of Whitgift pupils go on to study Languages at university and the successful candidate will need to continue to enthuse pupils and help them prepare for university success. The heads of the individual languages form a strong team with the Head of Faculty, and we are seeking to appoint someone flexible, dynamic, enthusiastic, innovative and collegiate.
Staff will be encouraged to contribute fully to the co-curricular life of the School and this is reflected in the salary offered. A strong commitment to the pastoral and house system is also anticipated. Accommodation may be available; alternatively assistance is offered towards removal expenses.
We welcome applications from all parts of our community as we aspire to attract staff that matches the social and cultural diversity of our student intake.
