The Trustees of George Dixon Academy are seeking to appoint a well-qualified, highly motivated and enthusiastic leader for the Geography team from September 2017.

George Dixon has achieved Academy status due to the exceptional rise in academic performance as recognised by the Department of Education; and was given the judgement of Good in all categories by Ofsted in January 2013. The Academy has also received national recognition, in 2014, from both the Minister of State for schools and the SSAT for the excellent progress of our students. Levels of progress in English and Maths have been significantly above the National Average over the past three years.

Geography is taught at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. We wish to appoint a teacher who has a true passion for the teaching of RE and who can also demonstrate the qualities required to lead and develop other teachers.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have the willingness and ability to lead and manage the work of the Department
  • Raise achievement through motivating, challenging and inspiring our students;
  • Teach Geography at all Key Stages;
  • Have a commitment to inclusion;
  • Help foster a culture of high expectations and achievement within the department;
  • Have drive, enthusiasm, resilience, warmth and humour;
  • Have opportunities to contribute to the wider life and ethos of the Academy.

1. Describe your philosophy on the teaching of Geography. (Maximum 400 words)

2. Write about a time when you have modelled good practice to colleagues. What was the impact? (Maximum 400 words)

3. Describe how you would lead the Geography department in contributing to the wider ethos of the school. (Maximum 500 words)

George Dixon Academy is a secondary school located in Birmingham, West Midlands. Founded in 1906, the school provides places to approximately 1000 pupils aged 11-18 in a co-educational setting, with around 100 of these on roll in the school sixth form, making it average-sized for a secondary school of its type.
