Job overview

The School

Harrogate Ladies’ College was founded 126 years ago and is an independent school with a Church of England foundation offering day, boarding and weekly boarding. The School is a member of the Girls’ School Association teaching boys and girls aged 2-11 and girls 11 -18 years.  Harrogate Ladies’ College was deemed to be Excellent in all areas in the ISI inspection of 2017.

The Role

We are looking for an inspiring leader run to our Geography department and be part of our Heads of Department team.

Geography pupils are taught in Tutor groups throughout Lower School (Years 7-9), following our own scheme of work.  In Middle School (years 10 and 11), we study for AQA Geography, again using our own scheme of work.  At A level we follow AQA Geography and the girls very much enjoy the fieldwork aspects of the course.  The department also offers drop-in clinics for pupils.

The Geography department is housed in a classroom alongside History and RS.  The Department has a store room located next to the classroom containing a large supply of resources including textbooks, past examination papers, worksheets and practical equipment.

Harrogate Ladies’ College is fully committed to enabling all girls to access technology to enhance Teaching and Learning, within a safe and secure environment.  Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) was introduced in 2018 in the Middle School and Sixth Form at HLC.  All girls can access their prep and digital resources remotely via the Learning Platform (iCommunity). Staff are expected to be fully supportive of the school’s Digital Strategy, and where possible use technology to improve student outcomes.  Computing, projector and interactive whiteboard facilities are available within the department.  Computer rooms are situated nearby and can be booked for use when needed.

All members of College teaching staff run a weekly club and take an active pastoral role as a Form Tutor. Our teachers should embrace the full programme of activities in this busy boarding school and supporting the pupils and other teachers at school events.

The Candidate

In addition to an excellent degree/relevant qualifications and strong record as a classroom practitioner, the applicant will be able to demonstrate the ability to think strategically, organise other people, communicate needs and plans to the department and Senior Leadership and to motivate others. Strong administrative skills will be essential.  High standards are expected of staff as well as pupils and we all strive to ‘be the best that we can be’.
