Job overview

Job Title: Head of Girls' Games & Clubs Coordinator

Location: Casterton, Sedbergh Prep School

Contract Type: Full-time, permanent

Salary: Competitive, in line with skills & experience

Sedbergh School, founded in 1525 by Roger Lupton, Provost of Eton, is an Independent Co-educational Boarding School. The Headmaster is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference and the Headmaster of the Prep School is a member of the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools.

Sport is within the DNA of Sedbergh School – both Prep and Senior – and the role of Head of Girls’ Games & Clubs Coordinator is critically important to the ongoing success of CSPS. Highlights from recent years include the current strength of hockey in the older years, with the U13s qualifying for IAPS National Finals, the remarkable progress in both participation and standard of girls’ cricket and some talented cross-country runners making their mark on the national stage.

The major team games for girls are hockey, netball and cricket, with tennis and rounders also featuring alongside athletics in the summer term. Swimming is taught primarily through PE lessons, alongside racquet sports and basketball. The majority of fixtures take place on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, with several opportunities each year for ‘mini-tours’ to Edinburgh or IAPS competitions. The Prep School embarks on an overseas Easter sports tour every two years, the last being to Northern Ireland in 2022.

The successful candidate will require the vision, motivation and skills to build upon our current success, and the creativity to initiate changes where needed. CSPS runs on the energy and group dynamic provided by a small but incredibly hard-working and loyal team of staff. The Head of Girls’ Games must buy into and contribute to that ethos.

One of the most appreciated aspects of our School provision is the extensive weekly offering of Friday Clubs; a comprehensive programme of extra-curricular activities which range from cooking to DTE Club to debating, sailing, climbing or community service. They have benefited hugely from the dedication and organisational skills of the current postholder and include those which are offered ‘in-house’ as well as through external providers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordination of Girls’ Games provision, curricular and extra-curricular; including a contribution to Games Department Action Plan
  • Arrangement and execution of girls’ inter- and intra-school fixtures, including operational detail such as catering and transport
  • Teaching curricular and extra-curricular Games
  • Arranging and staffing Girls’ sports tours
  • Attending and leading INSET as required
  • Creation, administration and organisation of Friday Clubs programme
  • Managing the budget for Friday Clubs programme
  • Teaching a second subject – please be very clear of your subject and age range in your application

Person Specification:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, with QTS status.
  • Proven track record in teaching Games; management experience is desirable but not essential for an otherwise outstanding candidate.
  • The ability to instill in children a passion for games and other activities, and to motivate and inspire Games staff.
  • The ability to cater for the needs of all abilities, supporting the inexperienced and stretching those that require additional challenge.
  • Expertise in coaching and / or playing one or more of the major team games; experience in hockey would be a particular advantage, though it is not essential.
  • Outstanding organisation, written and verbal communication skills, liaising with colleagues within CSPS and other schools and engaging with parents.
  • Contributing to the monitoring and planning of training needs for the Games department.
  • Resilience required to participate and enjoy life in a busy boarding school.
  • Familiarity with boarding education is desirable, but not essential.
