Job overview

Surbiton High Girls’ Preparatory School sits within the Surbiton High School Group (including the Boys’ Preparatory School and the Girls’ Senior School). It is also part of United Learning, a successful national group of academies and independent schools.

United Learning schools share a mission to bring out ‘the best in everyone’ and to improve the life chances of the children and young people in their care. The organisation’s cluster model enables high quality, bespoke school improvement and wider opportunities for both staff and pupils to work collaboratively.

Formed in 1884, Surbiton High School is known in London for academic excellence alongside a strong pastoral offering. The Girls’ Preparatory School has around 300 girls on roll, aged 4 to 11. RSAcademics is very pleased to be working with the Principal of Surbiton High School and Directors of United Learning to appoint a new Head from September 2021, or soon after. The current Head, Clemmie Stewart, leaves the School after six and a half very successful years to take on a new role.

Surbiton High Girls’ Preparatory School is a happy, warm and loving place where pupils are very much at the heart of everything. As soon as you are welcomed through the doors, you will see the vibrant artwork, hear the buzz of engaged learners, and see smiling faces in every corner. The School is proud of the fact that every member of its community is continuously learning and traditional pedagogy is combined with innovative methods within the curriculum. Through the delivery of a broad and enriching programme, girls are encouraged to make links with their learning and study concepts in great depth, thus allowing them to show mastery of ideas.

This is an excellent opportunity for a leader or aspiring leader looking to combine the autonomy of running their own school with the benefit of working within the umbrella of Surbiton High School, whose Principal you will report into, and as part of a national group. United Learning prioritises collaboration, values shared practice and provides high-quality professional development.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a clear commitment to the School and its community. You will model outstanding leadership, have a strong focus on learning and teaching and set high expectations for pupils and staff. Your professionalism, expertise and enthusiasm for education will be evident each and every day, in all that you do. As a personable individual, you will be strong with social media and enjoy the public-facing elements of the role, such as public speaking and presenting.

If you are looking for an exciting, challenging and highly rewarding role within the School and Group, that offers a strong commitment to professional development, and if you have an unshakeable dedication to improving the lives of young people, we encourage you to apply.

We are a school where a passion and energy abound, a school with a real heart and soul, where we look beyond the A* to offer a breadth of opportunity which allows every pupil to flourish and every staff member to develop and succeed.

Surbiton High School is a school “brimming with energy and joie de vivre.” (ISI Inspection Report). We pride ourselves on being an extraordinary community where people matter, results count and where a passion for excellence drives everything we do. We feed our pupils’ minds, but we also care passionately about their character development and happiness. Our approach to education means that Surbiton High School pupils achieve the very best exam results and are also compassionate, authentic young people with strong values, keen to make a positive difference in the world.

Our inspirational staff are dedicated to delivering a rich curriculum and programme of co-curricular activities which challenge our pupils to explore ideas for themselves. Whether engaged in learning in the classroom, or through musical, artistic, sporting, enterprise or charitable activities, our pupils are constantly encouraged to connect with the wider world and embrace new experiences to build their confidence. All staff are expected and encouraged to play a full part in the academic, co-curricular and pastoral life of the School.

At Surbiton High School, we aim to bring out the ‘Best in Everyone’, and this resonates in the investment that we make in our colleagues. We have a comprehensive whole School and individual INSET programme in place, including support for School Direct trainees as well as Newly Qualified Teachers (in our role as a regional NQT induction centre).

We actively encourage our staff to continue to develop their own expertise in the classroom and support their professional development through coaching and mentoring alongside professional qualifications such as: NPQML, NPQSL and MA courses in educational leadership. The School has a clearly developed leadership structure, offering extensive opportunities for career development and progression, including Heads of Department (Including Deputies) and Heads of Year (including Deputies) as well as Co-ordinators with specific responsibilities such as: Gifted and Talented, Oxbridge, Duke of Edinburgh and Expeditions.

Surbiton High School has approximately 1600 pupils aged between 4 and 18. Our Preparatory Schools are divided into the Girls’ Preparatory School and Boys’ Preparatory School, and the Senior School is girls only from age 11 upwards.

We are looking for applicants who are passionate about inspiring, encouraging and empowering our pupils and working with us to become the number one school of choice in South West London.
