Job overview

We are looking for an outstanding Head of History with a passion for education. The post will suit a well-qualified and experienced individual, committed to delivering an exceptional learning experience for every pupil and leading a high profile department in the school. History is a successful subject at Woldingham; over half the year choose to study it at GCSE and it is a popular choice at A Level. The Department consists of a team of five highly committed historians who work with a focus on equipping students with a strong knowledge base and the ability to evaluate as wide a range of perspectives as possible. We continually encourage independent thought and learning. There is also very strong culture across the Department of sharing resources and ideas. We are looking for a colleague who will be proactive in raising the profile of the department, including the development of its academic societies and Oxbridge mentoring.

Our girls’ passion for history speaks for itself. Their inquisitiveness about the past is infectious and they make each lesson fun to teach. The History Department, which works closely with the Politics Department, is based in its own suite of rooms each with excellent IT capabilities. There is a well-stocked history library as well as access to numerous online resources such as JSTOR and MASSOLIT. The department is keen to evolve and is always looking at adapting our schemes of work to reflect changing world perspectives.

The ability to teach history across all Key Stages and up to A Level/Oxbridge is essential, combined with first-rate organisational, team working and ICT skills.

Woldingham is a happy and successful Catholic boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18 and is firmly established as one of the top girls’ independent schools in the UK, outperforming many schools that are far more selective in their admissions process. Central to this achievement is Woldingham’s academic enrichment and extra-curricular programme, pastoral support and caring community. Close to London, yet in an outstandingly beautiful rural setting, Woldingham has a strong community and culture building on a proud heritage that stretches back 175 years. We are committed to an exciting future that is underpinned by fresh ideas, an innovative spirit and state-of-the-art facilities.

Woldingham School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. An enhanced DBS report will be required for the successful candidate.

Professional development and staff welfare

Our professional team of staff is Woldingham’s greatest asset, and we want to ensure that everyone is supported to work in an effective, enjoyable and fulfilling way. Staff Development is a high priority, with induction and mentoring programmes for Newly Qualified Teachers and new colleagues, plus an annual cycle of Personal Professional Development planning for all colleagues and a new Leadership Programme in development for September 2021.

Staff are welcome to use our range of outstanding facilities including the gym, squash and tennis courts and the swimming pool. Our Staffroom Committee organises regular social events, and a range of wellbeing initiatives support staff in their working life.
