Malcolm Arnold Academy is seeking a Head of History who is aligned with our mission to broaden the horizons of children through the provision of a world class education.

We are looking for a teacher of history who loves teaching, has significant subject expertise, knows the powerful knowledge in their subject and thrives on leading effective delivery across all classrooms. The development of the DRET history curriculum has been led by Trust Wide Lead Ben Walsh working closely with colleagues across the Trust to create a broad, rigorous curriculum which encompasses local, national and international History, rooted in up-to-date scholarship and inspiring topics from Vikings to Vietnam.

About the role

To play an active role in the stewardship of the curriculum/teacher development in history alongside other DRET subject leaders and the Trust-wide subject leader in history.

To contribute to and support all subject teachers’ engagement with their Trust-wide subject community and in-school curriculum/teacher development activity.

To ensure that in school curriculum/teacher development supports all teachers within the department to sustain their knowledge and practice as history teachers.

To engage with your wider subject education community through subject associations, subject education journals, subject-specific CPD on curriculum development and teaching

About our Academy

At Malcolm Arnold Academy, we ensure that all teachers are able to draw on the sources of scholarly authority and reservoir of thought and practice that have been developed within their specialist subject communities though our Trust- wide subject communities. This involves engagement for teachers with their wider subject education community through subject associations, subject education journals, subject-specific CPD on curriculum development and teaching. It also involves refreshing and constant renewal of subject knowledge, through reading and discussing scholarship, engaging in contemporary debates, and developing our own practice as teachers.

Subject communities are central to Malcolm Arnold Academy’s vision for curriculum and teacher development, whereby each subject community is made up of subject specialist teachers deeply engaged with curricular questions, renewing and holding ownership of the Trust-wide curriculum and sustaining their own subject expertise. Through Trust-wide subject community meetings and in-school department meetings, all subject teachers have responsibility and involvement with the Trust-wide curriculum development. We work collaboratively in our curriculum decision-making, so as to draw upon collective expertise and minimise unnecessary workload.

 Who we are looking for

Qualified Teacher Status

A degree in History

Experience in leading others

Experience of teaching in a UK academy

Familiar with recent developments in the teaching and learning of the subject including strategies for raising achievement.

Able to use assessment data to improve achievement.

About the Academy

Malcolm Arnold Academy is one of the David Ross Education Trust (DRET) schools. It is a popular and oversubscribed co-educational secondary school based in Northampton, Northamptonshire, for students aged 11-18. It has approximately 1300 pupils on roll, with around 130 of these pupils comprising our sixth form.

Malcolm Arnold Academy is a Good school, with our most recent OFSTED report being in May 2018, citing us as Good in all inspection judgement categories.

The trust, governors and senior leaders know the school well. They are determined that all pupils will make at least good progress. The school’s values of ‘friendship, truth, peace’ underpin the ethos of the school. There is a strong culture of openness, honesty and respect. Pupils make good progress across a range of subjects and all current year groups. The leadership of the school’s work with pupils who have special educational needs (SEN) and/or disabilities is strong. Pupils make good progress from their starting points, including pupils in the school’s specialist provision. The school’s work to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding is a strength of the school and contributes well to pupils’ personal development and good behaviour. The curriculum is regularly reviewed and adapted to meet the needs of pupils. The extra-curricular opportunities offered to pupils are outstanding and make a significant contribution to pupils’ personal development. Procedures to safeguard pupils are robust. Pupils feel safe and are taught well how to keep themselves safe. The school provides good support to vulnerable pupils.
