Job overview

Hill House School require someone to lead Hockey at the school, who will inspire in girls and boys a love of the sport and who will set the highest standards throughout the age range. An ability to also coach one of the school’s summer sports and to teach some general PE would be an advantage.

The Sports’ Department plays a central role in the life of the school, with 12 members of teaching staff. In addition, a number of other members of staff coach sport and also take teams. Sport is led by the Director of Sport, supported by heads of the main sports.

The school has a competitive fixture list; we are county champions at Girls’ and Boys’ Hockey at most age groups and have also had recent regional and national successes at Hockey, and Boys’ and Girls’ Rugby.

Pupils enjoy a sport friendly timetable, Games afternoons, Games and PE lessons, opportunities for Strength and Conditioning, and a full programme of sporting activities after school.

A standard week would see approximately 30 fixtures played against other schools, ranging from elite 1st team sport to B, C and even D teams. A large number of pupils also play hockey at Doncaster and Rotherham Hockey Clubs and South Yorkshire. A number are selected annually for the Yorkshire Performance Centre, which is hosted at the school.

The successful candidate will be an excellent coach and inspiring teacher, and an interest in pupil recruitment will be important, including within our successful programme of Sports Scholarships. The ability to manage and develop fruitful links with county and club organisations would also be an advantage.

Hill House is the leading co-educational, independent school in the area, situated on the borders of South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

It is an exciting and expanding school of over 800 children from age 3 to 18, where teachers can teach, and children can learn. The school is graded as ‘Excellent’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, is a proud member of HMC, an elite group of the world’s top 350 and independent schools, and has been named as Independent Secondary School of the Year North 2025, by the Sunday Times.

Hill House is a happy, vibrant, and caring school, blessed with a dedicated staff and supportive parents. We take pride in our high standards and high expectations. We expect the best from our pupils and work hard to ensure that each child enjoys being part of the Hill House community.

Our school is selective, in that children must be able to prosper at the school and be a willing member of our community. Our aim is to help children progress in as many directions as possible, to encourage their excellence and give them opportunities to develop skills away from the classroom, preparing them for their future lives.

Hill House was founded in 1912 and occupies a splendid site between Bawtry and Doncaster. It has a stunning grounds and facilities, harmonising the history of an outstanding picturesque campus with new, purposely designed 21st century facilities including the addition of a new Music and Art School, Fitness Centre and dedicated Year 6 Suite, developed in 2024.
