We want to talk to you if you are interested in working with us next year as a Head of House. Our pastoral systems are well established and highly effective. Our vision is to make our pupils the authors of their own life stories and not the subjects of them. Our house teams are pivotal to this aim.
We agree with Viviane Robinson when she writes:
"If staff and students do not feel physically and psychologically safe, if discipline codes are perceived as unfair or inconsistently enforced, then little progress is likely in the improvement of teaching and learning." (Student Centred Leadership, by Professor Viviane Robinson).
So we have implemented a very consistent systematic approach to our pastoral systems and our expectations of our pupils.
We have 6 parallel Houses of 250 pupils organised into 7 vertical tutor groups (with Years 7 to 11 in equal measure). The Head of House is assisted by a Behaviour Lead teacher and an Attendance Lead teacher leads each House.
The focus of the House work is on getting our pupils into school (attendance is above average) and spending time meeting and talking to the parents of those who don’t always behave themselves, don’t always do their work in class and don’t go along with our arrangements to get them back on track – because almost always their parents will do everything they can to support us because they care about their children.
Our House system means the six heads of House are doing exactly the same job so they can share ideas, talk through problems and generally learn together and from each other.
We try to look after our staff. We provide travel loans and have cycle to work, parking permit and childcare voucher schemes. All staff get priority admission to the school for their children. Teachers have lower than average teaching loads and we don’t expect them to do cover – so you have time to do the job properly. Our school dinners are well worth eating and you get free tea & coffee all day made by a qualified barista. Last but not least, you get to work with very nice people and pupils.
