Job overview

Heads of House hold key senior positions within the pastoral system at our Academy. Several schools have a House system underpinning their pastoral care, but very few have as many as eight Houses. Ours, named after lighthouses along the south coast, are small enough that the Heads of House, each of whom is only on a 50% timetable, can get to know each student and their parents/carers personally. Relationships within the House are strengthened through regular House assemblies and internal competitions which also provide an opportunity for friendly rivalry between the Houses.

The key indicator of success in this role is to secure the highest levels of achievement possible for students through challenge and support.

The Head of House role will be made up of 3 components:

  • General Head of House duties including attendance checks, to ensure the spiritual,      moral, social and cultural development and welfare of every student in your House
  • 10 Hours:Teaching* (*this role is not subject specific)
  • Academic Mentoring

In the recent Ofsted Inspection (Feb 2018) it was reported that ‘Pupils are safe in school and reported to inspectors that they feel safe. This is because they do not feel intimidated by other pupils and feel that everywhere in school is a safe place. All pupils who spoke with the lead inspector said they would be happy to speak to members of staff if they had worries’. The Academy has an excellent reputation within the local community with strong support from Governors, Parents, Students and a dedicated and highly motivated team of staff. Ofsted also commented that ‘The school engages well with parents, carers and the local community. You understand the importance of reaching out to secure support for different aspects of the school’s work. As a result, and with good reason, the school is held in high regard by parents and local employers. This also explains why the school is oversubscribed. The large majority of parents who responded to the online survey Parent View would recommend the school. As one parent who responded to the survey said, ‘The staff here really care.’

The Bourne Academy

The Bourne Academy is at the heart of the community of East Howe, offering local families an excellent education, new opportunities and facilities that are available to everyone.  It aims to raise students’ expectations, build their self-confidence, and teach them appropriate skills that allow them to build a successful career and contribute to society.  Our sponsors are Canford School, a leading independent school.

Canford believes that good education depends crucially on the relationships that are built up between staff, students, parents and the other stakeholders.  Mutual support, pride, ambition, trust and high expectations all combine to allow impressive educational achievements against a background of respect for each other and an acknowledgement of each other’s contributions.

Key to building these relationships is the pastoral care at the Academy and the links between the Academy, parents and others in the local community, helped by the academy’s central location in East Howe.
