Job overview

Avanti House is an all-through 4-19 school which opened in 2012. It comprises a two-form entry primary school and a six-form entry secondary. When full, in around 2020, it will provide for 1680 students; projected currently to be the largest Free School in the UK.

Currently the secondary phase has students in years 7 - 11. It is anticipated that the sixth form will open with between 90 and 140 students (internal and external). Although the secondary phase is currently, temporarily located in a site in Pinner, we have secured full planning permission for a new £20 million build on Whitchurch Fields in Stanmore, Harrow. The school will move there, once built, sometime in 2018.

Avanti schools secure exceptional outcomes for learners who make outstanding progress. But our vision is more than one simply rooted in achieving excellent results. In our uniquely holistic provision, character formation and spiritual insight stand side-by-side with educational excellence. Our ethos, which blends the traditional with the modern, embraces practices such as mindfulness, yoga, meditation and a vegetarian diet - all resting on a foundation which draws upon the spiritual and philosophical teachings of the Vaishnava sect of the Hindu tradition. This has led Ofsted to reflect, in all of our schools to date and including Avanti House School, commenting on how our ethos contributes to outstanding behaviour.

We are now looking for an outstanding practitioner to become the Head of Humanities for school in Harrow. You will likely be a Humanities teacher with three or more years of experience with good or better outcomes at key stages (secondary). You will be looking for a new and very different challenge and if appointed, would support the Principal and his senior team in delivering ongoing outstanding provision in this core subject.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The post is subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.

Full details of the recruitment timeline and application process can be found by visiting www.avanti.org.uk/careers

If you have any questions about the post or would like an initial confidential discussion, please contact the Principal’s PA, Justine Reilly via Reception on 020 8249 6830 or email justine.reilly@avanti.org.uk

Visits to the school prior to any application are welcome and will not be part of the assessment process. Please do also visit the Avanti House School site www.avanti.org.uk/avantihouse and the Trust site www.avanti.org.uk to find out more.

The DEADLINE for applications (electronic accepted - followed later in the post by a signed, hard-copy) is 8.00 am on Tuesday 18th April 2017.

Interviews will be held on week beginning 24th April 2017.

Completed applications should be signed and posted to the school FAO Ms. Justine Reilly (PA to the Principal) - Secondary site, Beaulieu Drive, Pinner HA5 1NB.

Alternatively, the application may be emailed directly to Simon.Arnell@avanti.org.uk

We very much look forward to hearing from you.

About Avanti House Secondary School

Avanti House is a very happy school where the behaviour and attitudes to learning, by all students are exceptional. Students have an established and meaningful ‘voice’ through the prefect system and school council. It is through working in close partnership with parents and students that the school has grown exponentially since its opening.

When Ofsted inspectors visited the school in July 2014, they reported:

“The behaviour of pupils is outstanding. They are, without exception, respectful and polite. New pupils are immediately included, and those with additional needs or who experience difficulty settling in are sensitively inducted until they feel safe.”

At Avanti House Secondary School we deliver a rounded education to nurture confident and creative young people who will thrive in adult life. We put an equal emphasis on the highest academic achievement alongside the development of character and spiritual insight.

We offer students a diverse range of opportunities both in and out of the classroom. For example, we offer the Duke of Edinburgh Award and various trips including residential visits to Barcelona, Isle of Wight, Wales, Belgium, Rome and France.

Avanti House Secondary School is part of the growing family of Avanti schools. Avanti schools are Hindu-designated faith schools. However, staff and students at Avanti House Schools do not originate from any specific faith background; applications are welcome from practitioners of any faith and from those of none. They will, however, be expected to be in full sympathy with the unique ethos and vision of the School.
