Head of Humanities (with Geography teaching)  in the Secondary Section

St. Nicholas School is seeking to appoint a Head of Humanities who offers significant Geography teaching expertise and who will enjoy guiding teachers in a highly stimulating and dynamic international environment. Current experience with IB Diploma is essential. Candidates will commit to the IB Diploma and be willing to contribute to the Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essays and CAS. The Humanities Faculty fully contributes to a rich and varied learning environment at St Nicholas where all learners in year 11 and 12 follow a full IB diploma programme. It is a successful, forward thinking and well-run entity where teacher/learners value sharing ideas, resources and experiences. The Faculty offers Geography and History from year 7 to 12 and Business Management, Economics and Global Politics at IB Diploma. The Year 7 to 8 courses are school designed and increasingly concept driven, inquiry-based projects. In Years 9 and 10 learners choose either Geography and History as an IGCSE course and complement this with a Brazilian Humanities course taught in Portuguese.  All individual subjects are led by a Head of  Department.  At Diploma all courses are offered at HL and SL and results are good to Excellent. Curriculum development is on-going and reflects the school’s inquiry-based philosophy. The department has interactive board or projectors in all classrooms and laptops and Chromebooks are available for learners. There are six full-time teachers and the faculty counts on exclusive use of five well-resourced classrooms and two additional adequately appointed spaces. 

The successful candidate will join a team who will evaluate the learning experience and make recommendations for and lead change towards a concept based, transdisciplinary learning experience across the pre Diploma part of the Secondary section. 

Candidates will bring:

  •  A university degree in the subject offered or a related subject along with evidence of recent professional learning. 
  • A recognised international teaching qualification with three years’ teaching experience
  • Significant experience of leadership within an educational setting and a commitment to collaboration and inclusive and distributive leadership 
  • A commitment to inquiry-based learning and the school's vision and mission
  • A commitment to international mindedness and IB teaching philosophy (www.ibo.org)
  • A positive and optimistic attitude toward students, learning and education.
