Job Scope:

To ensure all year subject teachers are hold accountable to develop whole-person bilingual education at YKPS Middle School.

Job Overview:

In addition to his/her teaching role, the Head of Department (HoD) is responsible for the leadership and management of a subject and provides curriculum & pedagogical leadership within the school. The HoD reports to the Director of Academics.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Management

  1. Lead and manage the subject teachers/staff team, working together to provide safe, secure, caring and inclusive professional environment for collaborative learning;
  2. Provide a safe, secure, caring and inclusive learning environment for students in which they are all encouraged to maximize their potential;
  3. Create a subject-team ethos that reflects the YKPS vision, mission, values and goals;
  4. Develop, coordinate, and implement all subject-team programs and policies contributing to students’ school experience;
  5. Keep track of students’ achievement by utilizing internal and external assessment data. Support students’ learning progression in an inclusive manner.
  6. Remain active and informed of current practices and innovations within subject and bring best practice to YKPS colleagues;
  7. Welcome, inform, and mentor new subject team members;
  8. Induct and lead/train subject teachers to implement school policies consistently (e.g. appraisal, behavior, child protection and safeguarding, academic monitoring, homework, drills, etc.) and run events smoothly (e.g. subject fieldtrip, subject-led events, etc.);
  9. Set agendas for and chair regular subject team meetings;
  10. Articulate the department representing the program to staff, parents, visitors to school and administration;
  11. Analyze and report on annual data relating to ZK/XYK performance. Work with Director of Academics to set targets for improvement in the subject;
  12. Improve subject teachers’ performance by developing the effectiveness of team members through monitoring and reviewing performance;
  13. Act as teachers’ reviewer in the school’s teacher development & enhancement plan, carrying out regular walk through & lesson observations and gathering student voice and staff feedback;
  14. Facilitate curriculum documentation and mapping (Atlas Rubicon), including key assessments;
  15. Support Student Affairs Office with new students’ admission process, including coordinate test paper making and marking, conducting interviews, etc.

Teamwork

  1. Work with Director of Academics to ensure scope and sequence of subject course offerings are logical and represent best practice while also complying with government requirements;
  2. Facilitate curriculum documentation and mapping (scope and sequence), including assessment and reporting calendar, by liaising with HoY and Director of Academics;
  3. Work with the Director of Academics to ensure full department grade entry and reporting at set grading periods;
  4. Liaise with other HoD to further inter-disciplinary teaching and learning and vertical coordination if needed;
  5. Liaise with HoD from primary and high school to ensure subject curriculum vertical alignment and support students’ transition program;
  6. Work with Director of Academics and Director of PLC to ensure good and proper professional development opportunities are provided for and professional development expectations are met by members of the department;
  7. Work with Tech Coach to promote further integration of educational technologies to supporting teaching and learning;
  8. Liaise with logistics department to ensure smooth and timely purchasing to meet department needs;
  9. Assist in arranging appropriately cover for classes when colleagues are absent.

Communication

  1. Communicate effectively and efficiently within the subject team and with others in the school community;
  2. Represent the subject team in communication with relevant YKPS stakeholders (e.g. parents, students, staff members)
  3. Demonstrate openness in sharing information and keeping relevant people informed of subject-team matters;
  4. Deal effectively and positively with students, colleagues and parents when responding to feedback;
  5. Visibility at major events for the community where teachers are involved;
  6. Ability to share ideas and information clearly, concisely, accurately and diplomatically to a wide range of audiences;
  7. Work collaboratively to facilitate regular communication and effective relationships between the subject team and other constituents.

Other

  1. Participate in the interview process for teachers when required;
  2. To actively seek out professional development opportunities to further expertise and knowledge in this area
  3. To undertake any other reasonable duty not mentioned above if needed.

Job Requirements:

  1. Completion of a BA degree;
  2. 5+ years teaching experience;
  3. Experience of leadership/leading colleagues;
  4. Teaching qualification;
  5. A thorough understanding of school’s curriculum offering;
  6. Excellent classroom practitioner/specialist committed to continued excellence at programs YKPS offer to students;
  7. The ability to make accurate assessment of students’ learning and be able to support others to do the same;
  8. Ability to lead and manage staff to work effectively both individually and in teams;
  9. High visibility/evidence of commitment to wider life of the school (e.g. students’ performance, community events etc.)
