About Highgate Junior School

Established in 1565, Highgate is a co-educational independent school, with around 1,800 pupils aged 4-18.

In 2020, Highgate was titled The Sunday Times London Independent School of the Decade by The Sunday Times Parent Power.

Highgate’s Junior School

Our Junior School has around 400 pupils aged 7-11 and is situated in a wonderful new building, opened in May 2017, and built to the highest specification.

Within the classroom

Our broad and creative curriculum is planned around specific learning objectives for every subject area, within each year group. We promote high levels of achievement and effort, so our pupils acquire the academic skills they need. However, we push the boundaries beyond a mere acquisition of knowledge: we want our pupils to develop the confidence to investigate and enquire, to solve problems, and to take responsibility for their learning.

We aim to enrich the learning experience of our pupils, broadening their social horizons and their cultural interests.

Beyond the classroom

Alongside their studies, Highgate pupils are offered a wide range of co-curricular activities which enhance both their childhood experience and their future aspirations. We are exceptionally fortunate when it comes to sport with extensive facilities including an indoor swimming pool, excellent staff and a wide range of activities available. We also encourage social responsibility through our charity work, both locally and further afield.

Junior School pupils attend a variety of clubs during lunchtime and after-school, while our Junior School Eco Council meets regularly to discuss activities and actions that support Highgate’s aim to be a sustainable school.

Across our Junior School, we continue to promote healthy and outdoor living, with a popular overnight camp-out in the grounds, plus a Year 6 residential trip to Wales during our Summer term during non-Covid times.

Location

Our School is situated in one of the most attractive and popular areas of North London, a short distance from central London and adjacent to Hampstead Heath. We endeavour to be a sustainable school and are well served by good public transport links.

Management

The day-to-day management of our Junior School is undertaken by our Principal, Mark James MA, who reports to our Head, Mr Adam Pettitt.
