A dynamic leader, manager and teacher is required for September 2021, with an induction in the last week of August to run a thriving department. The successful candidate will be a well-qualified graduate with a proven track record as an outstanding teacher with strong subject knowledge, who is able to participate in and contribute to the life of the School as a whole.
The Head of Learning for Life will be responsible for ensuring that the education of pupils is upheld as a priority and that the highest possible standards in work and conduct are achieved throughout the department. They will be dynamic and committed as a classroom teacher and will contribute his/her own particular strengths and skills to the future development of the Department and participate in and contribute to the life of the School as a whole.
All schools have a statutory responsibility to provide PSHE to all pupils. There is a core of material that must include in order that young people have the information and opportunity to explore issue that relate to their welfare and safety as children and growing adults: Learning for Life. We recognise that children mature at different rates, and our approach is therefore spiral. Consistency of approach and in the quality delivery is centrally important, and to that end a significant part of the postholder’s work is to provide shared material that is accessible and up to date. You will maintain and enhance the profile of the department throughout the School, helping and advising colleagues in their support of pupils, including at INSET. The postholder sits on the Pastoral Development Committee and the Online Safety Group. The postholder reports to the Deputy Head Pastoral and has responsibility for a budget that falls within that of the Deputy Head Pastoral.
Learning for Life, Oundle’s bespoke PSHE programme across all year groups, aims to help pupils develop good character, make wise choices and foster the skills and attributes they will need for a successful life beyond School. An essential part of an Oundle education, it is a pupil-led approach that continuously evolves in response to pupil needs and is taught by teachers from across different departments. The most important aspect of the Learning for Life programme is that it is developmental, spiral and comprehensive, reacting to issues as they arise both within the School and within wider society.
Moving away from the standard didactic approach, Learning for Life equips pupils not just with knowledge but a greater self-awareness, confidence and resilience. It facilitates the kinds of conversations a family would have, examining how to approach life from a practical and personal perspective, as well as preparing pupils as thoroughly and pragmatically as possible for life at university and beyond.
We are fortunate in our location at the heart of a beautiful market town: School and town are part of the same community and our pupils take their place within this community, not isolated from it. The town has a spirited cultural life, with an annual international festival, literature festival, and frequent performances of nationally touring shows at the School’s Stahl theatre. The town has a range of independent shops, coffee houses, pubs and eateries. Encircled by the river Nene, the town is also blessed to be surrounded by beautiful countryside with many picturesque villages nearby.
For those moving into the area, accommodation may be available at a discounted rate. Other benefits include a salary on the generous Oundle pay scale.
