The School was established at Maltman’s Green in 1918 when the Drummond family, who owned the estate, decided to move to a more manageable home.  Initially, Maltman’s Green was a Boarding School for girls to the age of 18 but in 1958 it became a Preparatory School and accepted day pupils.  Gradually the demand for boarding places decreased and boarding was phased out by 1995.  At this juncture, the Nursery unit was established.

Maltman’s Green now has in excess of 400 day girls between the ages of 3 and 11 years.  It is a non-selective Charitable Trust, administered by a Board of Governors.  The majority of the Governors are past parents of Maltman’s Green.  The Headmistress is a member of IAPS.

Maltman’s Green wants the very best for all of its pupils.  The prime aim is to provide high academic standards within a broad education, which will ensure that the potential of each individual girl is fully realised.  This can only be achieved within a happy, caring environment where girls are encouraged to value themselves, to respect others and to contribute to the life of the community.

The School serves the needs of all the girls by providing a breadth of education that will give a firm foundation for the next stage, and prepare them fully for the challenges and opportunities offered to young women in the modern world.  Maltman’s Green aims to foster desirable personal qualities such as self-reliance, confidence and respect for others, but perhaps the most important feature of the School’s approach is the attention given to individuals.  Each girl is helped to discover and develop her own talents and strengths, and areas of weakness are redressed.

Class sizes are from 16-20, and the School has a good pupil: teacher ratio.  Many of the lessons are taught by specialist teachers in small groups, in subject rooms designed for the purpose.  The staff of committed professionals have been appointed not just for their academic qualifications but because they demonstrate real concern for young children.  The School aims to instil courtesy and common sense in a framework of firm, but kindly discipline.

The School takes a lively approach to education; because a child’s natural curiosity can sometimes be her best teacher.  A wide variety of teaching methods, mixing the best of old and new, is used to support an extensive, modern curriculum.  Girls take pleasure in the content and presentation of their work, and the School achieves consistently strong academic results.

It is the School’s hope that all girls leave Maltman’s Green, not simply with excellent examination results, but also with a real enthusiasm for learning.  It is also hoped that they will leave with fond memories of growing up and making friends who will be retained long after they have moved on.
