Job overview

Applications are welcome from well-qualified men and women who are graduates with a proven record of excellence in the classroom and managerial experience in an academic school. Though it will be essential to have impressive experience and qualifications, the intention is to appoint the right person and not necessarily the person who best fits a pre-determined set of skills.

The Head of Middle School will be compassionate and caring, and will be an able communicator, with a positive, encouraging and collaborative style. Working closely with the 42 Middle School House Tutors, he/she will lead the good daily running of the Middle School and oversee the academic and pastoral welfare of all pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11, especially mindful of the transition for pupils to the Sixth Form. He/she will also co-ordinate 13+ Admissions with the Registrar (at 13+ we have about 100+ candidates sitting the exam).

This is a very important and demanding leadership role, of crucial importance to the well-being and good daily running of the School in setting and maintaining the highest standards in terms of academic work, pastoral care, commitment and discipline. It will require administrative, communication and people skills of the highest order and an ability and enthusiasm to know extremely well each pupil in the Middle School. The role requires good judgement and entails high-order communication skills, especially with parents in public or in personal meetings, on the telephone or by e-mail. He/she will command respect in balancing approach-ability with natural authority, through providing knowledge and leadership and by having a strong presence around the School as a whole.

The successful candidate must have an enthusiastic vision for this important new role, which has delegated autonomy in leading every aspect of the Middle School. It will be necessary to have excellent communication skills with an understanding of strategic leadership as well as an eye for detail in the more routine day-to-day issues.
