Role of Head of Middle School

The role of the Head of Middle School is to give a purposeful and well-judged lead to all aspects of the Middle School’s life and ensure that each member of Y9 to Y11 is valued and receives all necessary support, encouragement and guidance.

As a senior member of staff you will be expected to take a leading role in upholding the ethos and discipline of the school and take an active part in the wider life of the school.

Main tasks:

Job descriptions will be reviewed annually and the following list of duties and responsibilities should not be regarded as restrictive or exhaustive:

• leading and directing the work of the team of tutors in Y9 to Y11

• devising, monitoring and reviewing the tutorial programme for Y9 to Y11, and liaising closely with the Head of Lower school, Head of Sixth Form,  careers staff and subject leader for religious education regarding the topics to be covered

• monitoring student behaviour and progress, and dealing with academic and behaviour referrals

• monitoring the use of middle school form rooms at breaks and lunchtimes

• regularly providing the headteacher and senior leadership team with an overview of students’ progress and behaviour

• ensuring that pupils in Y9 to Y11 are clear about the school’s expectations regarding uniform and are correctly attired

• establishing and maintaining good relations with parents 

• working with appropriate external agencies eg Healthy Minds (NHS)

• attending Subject Leaders  and Heads of School meetings on a monthly basis

• arranging helpers for parents’ meetings  (teas etc) and maintaining a presence until the end of the evening

• participating in the school assembly rota and leading Middle School assemblies on a regular basis

• participating in the school’s performance management programme

• supervising the production of school reports for Y9 to Y11 and internal reports, which will include proofreading all Middle School reports and ensuring a high standard of communication and information where appropriate

• liaising regularly with our Head of Sixth Form to ensure a smooth transition from Y11 to Y12 where appropriate

• participating with the Senior Leadership Team in the duty rota (break, lunch and bus duties)   

The postholder may be asked to do other duties within the general scope of the job, but any duties and responsibilities outside the general scope of the post will be required only with the agreement of the postholder.

Queen Elizabeth's Grammar, Alford is a co-educational, selective secondary academy based in Lincolnshire, educating students aged 11-18. 

The secondary school has approximately 575 pupils on roll. It has membership of the Young Journalist Academy and has a radio station run by its students.

They show respect for each other and have very well developed social skills. This is seen in their willingness to make a contribution to the school through the numerous opportunities to take responsibility and to organise activities. Sixth form students are very strongly involved in the rest of the school and provide impressive examples for others. There is a very strong sense of community in the school."
