Westbrook Hay

Founded in 1892, Westbrook Hay is a thriving co-educational independent Prep school with 360 pupils from 3-13 years who enjoy a broad curriculum, achieve excellent results and have the all-important confidence to succeed. There is a strong ethos to be a welcoming, all-inclusive family community that provides the best for, and expects the best from everyone. The school has recently been rated ‘Excellent’ by ISI and has grown to near capacity, waiting lists are in operation in most year groups.


Head of Music Vacancy

We are seeking to appoint a creative, dynamic and inspiring Head of Music. With expert subject knowledge and passion for learning, the successful candidate will be motivated to stretch and challenge our most able musicians, but also committed to maintaining a culture of inclusion, where music is enjoyed by all.

The ideal candidate will be an excellent practitioner in the classroom, demonstrating a desire to ensure that the music curriculum is engaging and exciting. In addition to this, those applying should possess excellent keyboard skills and a first-rate understanding of prep school music making. The position also requires a sound understanding of KS1, KS2 and KS3 music. The candidate should be able to develop our pupils' confidence and curiosity, enjoying the opportunity to lead and develop practice in this ambitious and successful independent school.

Applicants will also be expected to show that they have relevant educational leadership and management experience. There are no set criteria for this and potential is important. A good understanding of, and a commitment to the ethos of, an independent school will be important but it is not essential to have worked in an independent school in the past. However, it is imperative that candidates possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.


Safeguarding

The safety and well-being of the children in School is paramount at all times. Staff are responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children for whom they are responsible, or with whom they come into contact. Staff will adhere to and ensure compliance with the School’s Child Protection Policy at all times. If in the course of carrying out their duties, a member of staff becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the School, it is their responsibility to report any concerns to the school’s Designated Senior Lead for Child Protection or the Headmaster.

This appointment is for January 2023 but it is possible for the successful candidate to start earlier if appropriate.

It is anticipated that interviews will be held on week beginning Monday 13th June. Although the programme is yet to be confirmed it will include an interview, the teaching of a lesson and other tasks. Candidates will be offered a tour of the school and lunch, if the timing is appropriate. Overnight accommodation is available on request.

Pupils enjoy a broad curriculum, achieve excellent results and have the all-important confidence to succeed. The school roll is currently at a record high of around 380 pupils and in September 2023 announced that it is growing its senior section of the school from Year 8 to Year 11 and will begin offering GCSEs.

This is something we cherish and, even though we are potentially going to grow slightly in size, we do not want to lose this ethos. We believe our ethos separates us from larger competitor schools in our locality. This ethos is generated by the staff and their relationships with the pupils and parents.
