Head of Music MPS-UPS (TLR2B currently £4,944) + Fringe Full time Permanent Contract For Summer Term 2023 We are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic teacher to lead this successful Department. Candidates should have excellent communication skills, a track record of improving results and a passion for music. We are lucky at Verulam to have a purpose-built music block with two classrooms, 4 practice rooms as well as smaller rooms for music technology. We have a number of Mac Mini computers running Logic and Muse Score and a suite of 16 PCs with access to Muse Score as well as web-based sequencing software such as BandLab.

At Verulam we see music as an essential part of school life. All students get to experience music throughout their time here whether it be listening to performers in assembly or taking part in one of our many extra-curricular groups many of which are open to all. Music Education enhances learning skills, communication skills, creativity, teamwork, discipline, cultural awareness, respect for others, and self-esteem through personal accomplishment.

The Music Department is vibrant, lively and fun.  We nurture our students,

developing both their confidence and standards of excellence.  There is

something for everyone and every year an ever-growing proportion of our

students enjoy an extensive programme of instrumental lessons and co-curricular activities. There are over a dozen different groups/choirs and clubs on offer including Jazz Band, choir, string group, Samba drum group, brass group, guitar group, Rock School, Junior Band, theory clubs and a Jazz ensemble. The Music Department has a tradition of cooperating with the Head of Drama to produce pantomimes and musical shows.  Other highlights of the musical year include performing at the annual service of Thanksgiving and Dedication at St Albans Abbey, the service of nine lessons and carols and the spring and summer concerts. We are located in St Albans, a beautiful and vibrant Cathedral city with a lively cultural life and a huge variety of restaurants, bars, pubs and shops. Recently named in the Sunday Times as the best place in the southeast to live, St Albans is surrounded by beautiful countryside but is still only 20 minutes from London by train and with easy access to motorways and airports.

Verulam School is a high achieving boys’ school with a mixed Sixth Form, which forms part of the highly successful BeauSandVer consortium.  As a school, our core values of “Excellence, Character, Respect” permeate all that we do. 

The school has good GCSE and A Level results and achieved an above average Progress 8 score of +0.22 in 2019. (Last national data set).  It was

judged to be a Good school in all categories by Ofsted in October 2018. Early Career Teacher Package

Alban Academies Trust offers an enhanced induction programme for all of their Early Career Teachers (ECTs). This programme normally commences at the beginning of July with our 3-week summer induction programme. Attendance on the induction attracts an attendance payment of £2,000 (£1,000 paid in July and £1,000 paid in August). ECTs are then contracted on the main pay scale from 1st September.

The induction programme is delivered at home schools as well as jointly, enabling all ECTs to meet their peers within the Trust.

All ECTs are provided with a laptop.

Individual support is provided by subject and senior leader mentors and we offer subject specific as well as general training through the Alban Teaching School Alliance (ATSA) and Herts for Learning (HfL) events, for example:

  • HfL subject specific training (not the ECT conference)
  • ECT networks (secondary and primary)
  • New to form tutor training (if appropriate)
  • Attendance at Teaching and Learning Conference (date TBC)
  • Subject specific enhancement in (Maths, MFL, Physics) – if needed

Excellence, Character and Respect

Verulam is a high achieving boys’ school with a mixed Sixth Form, which forms part of the highly successful BeauSandVer consortium.

The school has good GCSE and A Level results and achieved an above average Progress 8 score of +0.22 in 2019.  Results in 2020 were excellent with 84% of students achieving a Grade 4 or higher in English and Maths.  At A Level, students achieved an average Grade of B-.  Sixth Form students move onto prestigious university places and high level apprenticeships.  Verulam was judged to be a Good school in all categories by Ofsted in October 2018.

As part of the AAT we offer an enhanced induction programme for all our NQTs.  This programme starts at the beginning of July with our 3 week summer induction programme, which attracts an attendance payment of £2,000 and a contract on the main pay scale from 1st September.  Support is provided by subject and senior leader mentors and we offer subject specific as well as general training through the Alban Teaching School Alliance and Herts for Learning events.

All our teaching staff are provided with a laptop and as our own admitting authority, our admissions criteria now includes a children of staff rule.

In 2020, we introduced a Bring Your Own Device scheme to Years 7 and 12 to enable us to deliver a blended learning environment with every student able to use their own device in the classroom.  This programme will roll out across all year groups.

Our Sixth Form is part of the BeauSandVer Consortium that provides high-quality post-16 education across Beaumont, Sandringham and Verulam Schools.

Verulam places great emphasis on engagement in extra-curricular activities, drama, music and sport.  Outdoor education is also popular with high levels of participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
