Job overview

Since its opening in 2003 as the second 11–19 school in the now six-strong Emmanuel Schools Foundation, The King’s Academy has made exceptional provision for students in south Middlesbrough. Our vision is for each person in our schools to be valued, challenged and inspired, being ‘made in God’s image’ and therefore infinitely precious, morally responsible and gifted for a purpose.

We seek, for Easter or September 2023, a passionate and highly motivated Head of Music to lead an exceptional team of committed professionals. This is a newly-created post and is advertised at an exciting time in the Academy’s development of its music provision.

The Academy provides free musical instrument tuition to all students in Years 7 and 8, supported by the Music in Secondary Schools Trust (MiSST) programme. Students have weekly lessons as part of their curriculum time, supported by peripatetic staff, and through the MiSST programme have opportunities to engage with other schools in residential visits and the annual MiSST concert in London.

In Key Stages 4 and 5, we offer vocational courses in music performance and music technology and are keen to develop both GCSE and A level music pathways alongside these courses.

Alongside its strong curriculum offer, the Academy also provides a range of opportunities for students to engage in extracurricular music through bands, a choir and an orchestra. The music department also contributes to the wider life of the Academy through our annual Carol Service with a full Year 7 choir, as well as contributing to other events such as our annual School Production and Exhibition of Student Talent events.

If you believe you have the vision and commitment to work in a highly inclusive school which seeks to raise achievement and provide students with broad and rich experiences, setting consistently high standards for yourself, your team, and your students, please do contact us.

To arrange an informal visit or call, please email: recruitment@thekingsacademy.org.uk or call 01642 577577.

Closing date: 9.00am on 13 February 2023

Interview date: w/c 13 February 2023

  • Enhanced sick pay, maternity leave and paternity leave (dependent on length of service)
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Funded eye tests and glasses for DSE users (subject to T/Cs)

The King's Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff to share this commitment. Where the post is engaged in regulated activity, and/or an opportunity for contact with children the position will be subject to an enhanced DBS check. In addition, as part of the shortlisting process, and in accordance with statutory guidance, we may carry out an online search (for publicly available material) to help identify any incidents or issues that have happened which we may want to explore with shortlisted applicants at interview.
