Founded in 1646, Reading Blue Coat School is a leading independent day school with 750 pupils, boys aged 11 – 18 and a co-educational Sixth Form. Set in a beautiful country estate of 46 acres of sport fields, grounds and woodlands overlooking the River Thames in the village of Sonning, just outside Reading, we provide a wonderful working environment.

The Head of Outdoor Education is a new role, which includes the activities of School Staff Instructor to support the Combined Cadet Force, as well as management of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

The School prides itself on mutual respect, tolerance and courtesy and all activities seek to strengthen these values. Co-curricular activities, including CCF and D of E, are designed to enable pupils to develop practical and social skills such as leadership, enterprise and communication.

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) covers all three Armed Services. Gold, Silver and Bronze D of E awards are popular and well supported by the pupils.

You will work closely with teachers and support staff to ensure that the School’s outdoor education programme is varied, safe, exciting and motivational.

While the oversight and management of CCF camps/training and Duke of Edinburgh expeditions is expected, it is not a requirement to attend each trip.

This role is a support staff role (non-teaching). You will be line managed by the Assistant Bursar, with a close reporting relationship to Deputy Head (Pastoral) for Activities, and to the Contingent Commander (CCF).

The ideal candidate will have the knowledge and experience to act as the School Staff Instructor for the CCF or be willing and able to complete the necessary training courses in this area. You are likely to have strong leadership and management skills and experience; excellent organisational and planning ability; and be an effective motivator. You must be committed to the School’s ethos and values and the development of young people.

Ideally you will have experience of working with young people, through prior experience in a Cadet Training Team, a military outreach or a Cadet organisation. This opportunity will be particularly suited to an ex-Regular or ex-Reservist in the military, very likely a senior Non-Commissioned Officer or Commissioned Officer with the relevant competences.

We offer an excellent pay and benefits package, including 33 days holiday (plus additional days); excellent pension scheme; and free meals and refreshments.

Further details and an application form can be downloaded from our website: or contact the Human Resources Manager, Tel: 0118 933 5813 email:

Closing date for applications: 30 November 2016
Interviews will be held on 13 or 14 December 2016

Applications must be submitted electronically on a Support Staff application form and may be accompanied by your CV and covering letter.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants must be willing to undergo checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service enhanced check.
