Job overview

THE ROLE

The core purpose of this post is to lead the PE department and management of the PE facilities. It is expected that the successful candidate will consistently plan and deliver outstanding lessons within the department and contribute to the development of the PE department within the school and across the Trust. There is an expectation that the PE department will make a significant contribution to the enrichment programme including a range of clubs and fixtures. The Head of PE will lead an innovative and forward–looking department taking responsibility for line managing and coaching members of the department.

THE PE DEPARTMENT

All students at the Academy take part in core PE from year 7-11, having 2 x 50 minute lessons per week. They can also study GCSE PE or a vocational qualification as one of their option subjects. The PE department is high achieving and in 2022 20% of the GCSE cohort achieved a level 9. There are 4 members of staff in the department and the facilities include a sports hall, MUGA, 4G Astro, fitness suite, gymnasium and plenty green areas which have football/rugby pitches in the winter and athletics, cricket, softball and rounders in the summer. There are also two designated theory rooms in the PE block, one of which is a fully fitted computer room. Sports plays a large part of Laureate life for our students and there are many opportunities to take part in lunch and afterschool enrichment clubs. We have external sports coaches who lead clubs for netball, football, basketball and athletics. Students are entered into the local leagues ran in Dacorum, as well as county leagues and cups. This is an exciting time to lead an outstanding and hard-working PE team. We provide a positive and optimistic working environment focused on student progress.

WHO WE ARE

The Laureate Academy is a flourishing mixed, non-selective secondary school and sixth form based in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, admitting students from the ages of 11 to 18.

We are developing an academic culture at Laureate Academy where the highest standards are expected of staff and students. It is a dynamic school, where students and staff are exceptionally well supported.

We are part of Future Academies, a Multi-Academy Trust which includes three primary schools and six secondary schools in and around London and Hertfordshire. We are motivated by a mission of social change and reducing educational inequality. Our school and Trust are unique in our approach to a knowledge-rich curriculum; our school motto is Libertas per cultum (Freedom through education), and in our strong emphasis on raising young people’s aspirations and outcomes through the teaching of classical and traditional subjects. Our children and young people study a bespoke curriculum developed by researchers at our Curriculum Centre, which places a focus on developing their cultural literacy and their awareness of the forces, words and events that have shaped our society today.

THE BENEFITS

  • The chance to make a difference to children’s and young people’s lives. Future Academies is of the belief that all children have the right to enriching education through a knowledge-rich and child-centric approach: our teachers can therefore make a dramatic impact on the lives of these children.
  • Fast career progression. Because knowledge and intelligence, rather than length of service, are lauded and rewarded at Future Academies, teachers and support staff can quickly take up great responsibility, adding to their already exceptional experience and knowledge, joining the SLT or writing for the Trust’s Curriculum Centre, where our in-house textbooks are produced.
  • Excellent CPD. The Trust is knowledge-centric and encourages CPD at all levels with excellent opportunities for swift career progression, within the Academy and Trust. This includes Leadership Development opportunities.
  • Knowledge-rich staff team. You will be working with a supportive leadership team, cohesive staff body, and very purposeful environment with excellent resources. Being part of a Trust of schools enables you to share knowledge across a wider range of educational professionals.
  • Additional benefits. We also offer a range of employee benefits including Perkbox and the Cycle to Work scheme. Our location is well served by public transport and we have free on-site car parking.
