Job overview

Head of Physical Education

September 2022 start

Full Time

Canary Wharf College Crossharbour is a new, forward thinking and growing school where opportunities to be involved in wider, whole-school development are plentiful. The highly motivated leadership team value shared ideas, initiative and boundless positivity:

“Nobody left behind, nobody held back, everybody loved”

The Role

We are seeking a highly-ambitious and experienced Head of Physical Education for September 2022 (April 2022 is a possibility for the right candidate), to continue with the development of an outstanding department in our expanding school.

The successful candidate will lead and be responsible for the delivery of core and GCSE PE whilst also raising the opportunities for competitive sport. They will strive to create opportunities for character development whilst promoting the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle through physical activity. They will establish the direction for teaching, learning and assessment in Physical Education, in-line with the whole-school pedagogical strategy of Learning for Mastery, to set the highest expectations and ensure that all students achieve the very best outcomes.

All our subject specialists take pride in sharing their subject passion with our students and thus demonstrating their own ‘love of learning’. Opportunities to develop new initiatives, in or out of the department, are restricted only by imaginations.

Departmental and whole school responsibilities will provide excellent experience for a successful candidate who is looking to progress to senior leadership or continue with their desire to excel in the leadership of Physical Education.

Our School

Canary Wharf College Crossharbour is a new school with the highest ambitions for young people in our community. We opened in 2016 and moved into our new temporary site with purpose-built facilities in September 2018. The school currently has 400 students and will have 450 from Years 7-11 by September 2022. Our first GCSE cohort completed their studies in the Summer 0f 2021.

We have a strong educational ethos ‘To Live, Share and Celebrate a Love of Learning’ and we embed this ethos by aligning everything that we do with four key principles:

Curriculum at the Centre: we remain ‘obsessed’ with what we teach our students

Exemplary Behaviour: we have clear principles informing behaviour and conduct to achieve the highest standards of behaviour for learning

Exceptional Teaching: we have a clear pedagogical strategy and support every member of staff to be able to delivery consistently excellent teaching

Valuing every child: we work tirelessly to alleviate barriers to individual student achievement

The school is made up of committed and aspirational staff across all levels of the organisation, all of whom are fully subscribed to creating a positive culture that is focused on individual flourishing rather than the narrow metrics of performance that have dominated the last few decades of education in the UK. The school therefore operates around three distinct strands: Intellectual Development, Personal Development and Positive Relationships. Staff development is a key priority and we boast a unique collaborative approach where, through regular sessions, senior leaders support all staff to take ownership for their own development by providing high quality guidance and by promoting teachers to read widely, make research-informed decisions, as well as attend tailored internal and external CPD.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience and a strong track record of delivering PE GCSE, BTEC and A Levels to an excellent standard.
  • Has experience running various additional sports clubs as part of a whole school Extra-Curricular programme and can build on the Borough wide sports success already enjoyed by the school.
  • Is experienced in teaching multiple sports to an outstanding level and the desire to raise the profile of basketball, cricket and athletics across both boys and girls.
  • To monitor and develop standards of teaching and learning within the department and implement strategies for sustained improvement.
  • To lead the development of differentiated schemes of work at KS3 and KS4 so every pupil makes progress, and nobody is left behind.
  • Is committed to the positive school ethos and is enthusiastic about joining an ambitious and expanding school.
  • Has the vision, drive and leadership skills to develop and lead an outstanding department.
  • Has high expectations and a commitment to raising intellectual and personal standards.
  • Demonstrates excellent teaching practice and shows significant evidence of improving the outcomes of pupils.
  • Has excellent communication skills, with an ability to motivate and inspire others.
  • Is resilient, with an ability to remain motivated when tackling challenging tasks.
