Job Description:

Thames British School is seeking an experienced and talented Head of Performing & Expressive Arts. The ideal candidate will be a specialist in either art or music with experience in leading and managing a team of teachers and organising exceptional art, music, dance and drama events and performances.


Responsibilities:

  • Employ best practices as a teacher of art or music.
  • Lead and manage the art and music departments, providing guidance, support, and training to teachers.
  • Develop and deliver a high-quality and engaging arts curriculum that meets the needs of all students, including those with learning needs.
  • Facilitate high departmental planning, teaching, assessment and feedback standards.
  • Track student progress and attainment and respond to trends with appropriate interventions; optimise student achievement, especially examination cohorts.
  • Take a lead role in managing and quality-assuring events and performances related to the PEA subjects (art, music, dance, drama).
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes the well-being and personal development of all students in the arts.
  • Work closely with parents and carers to build positive relationships and ensure that they are informed and engaged in their child's learning journey in the arts.
  • Collaborate with other leadership team members to ensure that the school is delivering the best possible education to our students in the arts.
  • Support the managing director and HR department in interviewing candidates for the art and music teaching positions.
  • Ensure that the PEA team adheres to all relevant school policies and procedures, including health and safety regulations, safeguarding and child protection.


Requirements:

  • Full teacher certification in the UK or applicant’s native country for secondary art or music (i.e. Bachelor of Education, PGCE, QTS or equivalent).
  • At least 5 years’ experience in teaching art or music, with a minimum of 3 years in a leadership role in an international school setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills.
  • A deep understanding of the arts curriculum, and a passion for teaching and learning art or music.
  • Experience of delivering a broad and balanced arts curriculum that meets the needs of all students, and an understanding of different teaching methodologies.
  • Preference for a specialist in either art or music, but with the ability to oversee both departments.
  • Familiarity with the Cambridge programme or an English-style national curriculum is essential; familiarity with the IBDP programme is desirable.
