Job overview

The Role

We are seeking a well-qualified and enthusiastic Head of Performing Arts to join this established, progressive and well-resourced department. The academy would like to appoint someone who is passionate about Drama and Music and enjoys teaching. Ideally, you will have a track record of improvement and some experience of managing staff. You will have a clear strategy to further the development of Academic Performing Arts to achieve excellence within the school.

The successful candidate will be able to lead, manage and develop the subjects of Drama and Music across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. A key responsibility will be to actively secure the commitment of Performing Arts to the vision, direction, climate, culture and policies of the academy and lead by example at all times.

As Head of Performing Arts, you will promote participation and ensure that extra-curricular activities play a part in the students' weekly routine. You will also ensure that the academy identifies and supports Drama and Music excellence and provides opportunities for students to develop in their specialist areas. You will lead the quality assurance of educational provision by monitoring teaching and learning, observing lessons, and evaluating the department’s performance, and you must be willing to participate in extra-curricular activities, including leading on and overseeing concerts, performances and school productions.

If you share our aspirations to deliver a theatrical programme that is inclusive and flexible, in which all our students can participate, enjoy and achieve, we would be delighted to hear from you.

About Us

Our Ofsted Report February 2020 says, “The school has a warm and welcoming atmosphere” and “Pupils at The Highcrest Academy happily live up to the school’s motto of ‘aspire and achieve’”.

Situated in the leafy Chilterns and within easy reach of Central London, Highcrest is culturally and academically diverse and is the only academy in Buckinghamshire that caters for students of ‘all abilities’. Some of our students need all your support, whilst others need to be challenged and stretched. Our inclusive and successful House system, a wide range of clubs, visits and trips helps to bring our whole school community together.

There are approximately 1,000 students on roll, including the Sixth Form. Recent additions to our site include a gym and restaurant/coffee shop for both staff and students, as well as a purpose-built Sixth Form Centre.

In Return

Highcrest offers a comprehensive induction and an extensive personalised CPD plan for all staff. HODs are expected to attend a leadership development programme designed to prepare them emotionally and professionally for Senior Leadership. In addition, we are an outward-facing school with regard to liaising with neighbouring schools, having developed partnerships with PiXL and other networks to further enhance the professional experiences of our HODs.

“Staff feel very well supported by senior leaders. According to staff, they feel valued because senior leaders are approachable…”. Ofsted Report February 2020

A thriving and friendly academy in the heart of the community, with staff recognition schemes and a free gym and staff sports teams to counter the free breakfast, “Friday Treats” and on-site coffee shop! We also offer the possibility of shared staff living accommodation and on-site parking.

The Highcrest Academy is a vibrant, happy school in which every student is given the opportunity to develop their talents and to flourish as individuals. We are relentless in our pursuit of building a cohesive culture and curriculum that matches the varied needs of our students.

Our motto, ‘Aspire and Achieve’ is central to our philosophy. We are committed to making sure that every student makes outstanding progress and succeeds both academically and in terms of their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Indeed, we value a strong work ethic and aim to develop, sometimes hidden or unsuspected talent, into fruition.

At Highcrest, we are committed to setting high expectations for the conduct of our pupils and believe it is crucial for there to be an established culture in which all are able to excel. We want all the children who come to the academy to enjoy their learning and to become thoughtful, articulate, confident and responsible members of society.

Our personalised curriculum is enhanced by numerous extra-curricular opportunities, community and business projects, national and international competitions and a thriving House System. This encourages staff and students of all ages to work together.

The Highcrest Academy is the only all-ability academy in Buckinghamshire and is a culturally diverse, over-subscribed school, making it a fantastic place to teach. There are approximately 1000 students on roll, including Sixth Form. We know from pupil surveys that students are proud of our school and, when parents have been surveyed, the level of parent satisfaction has also been exceptionally high.

We are very aware that The Highcrest Academy is part of a community and we work hard to instil a sense of local and global responsibility. This means that students take part in many activities which enhance the local community, and have a real understanding of their role in improving the work community.

Our mission is to create a positive, secure and happy learning environment where all students experience success, friendship, respect and self-worth; where students value and celebrate the diverse talents and cultural heritage of all, and achieve their full potential in becoming responsible citizens, respecting the rights of other and contributing to our society.
