Job overview

We are looking for an inspirational, innovative and talented person to lead our Physical Education and Sports Programme.  You will join our exceptional teaching team and contribute to the wider curricular life of the school.

The successful candidate will have energy, be an outstanding role model for our girls, have high standards, excellent communication skills and a record of high quality teaching/coaching at different age groups. They should also demonstrate an ability to lead and communicate a vision for sport in the school and be able to work with the Headteacher and senior leadership team to realise that vision. They should be passionate about their subject, have competed to a high level in one or more sports and be able to enthuse our girls through the provision of high quality teaching and learning encouraging each pupil to develop her potential to the full.

Reporting to the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher.

Interviews likely to be Thursday 16th November and Friday 17th November.

Team Leadership 

  • Manage and lead physical education staff and sports coaches. 
  • Give guidance, support and advice to colleagues in the department.
  • Chair and record weekly department meetings. 
  • Liaise and work with the Headteacher, other members of Leadership Team and other Heads of Department. 
  • Contribute to the achievement of the strategic aims of the school. 
  • Plan, organise and deliver all sports fixtures and sporting events including House sports events. 

Learning and Teaching 

  • Ensure that pupils realise their potential in attainment and wider achievement through high quality learning experiences.
  • Identify resources needed to support learning, teaching and excellence in sport. 
  • Advise and co-operate with the SLT on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangements. 
  • Participate in the development and teaching of cross-curricular themes and delivery of Sports assemblies. 
  • Undertake a designated programme of teaching. 
  • Record and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils. 
  • Undertake any other reasonable duty assigned by the Headteacher.

School improvement and quality assurance 

  • Formulate a vision for the development of sport within the school and within the context of the school’s strategic aims. 
  • Prepare an annual departmental improvement plan (after a process of audit through self-evaluation and review). 
  • Lead curriculum development and quality assurance and ensure that systems are in place to monitor, evaluate and promote the continuing professional development of colleagues within the department. 
  • Develop and deliver the sports scholarship programme for scholars and more able students.

School ethos 

  • Create and maintain a positive environment which secures good teaching, effective learning, high standards of attainment and good discipline across the department. 
  • Contribute to and promote the development of a positive school ethos and achievement of the seven school values.
  • Manage and participate in extra-curricular activities, games and fixtures.
  • To organise the department’s contribution to Open Days, Experience Days and Scholarship assessments. 
  • To organise the presentation of sports awards, badges and trophies in assemblies.
  • To organise regular newsletter contributions sharing the successes of the teams and individuals.

Pupil support 

  • Employ a range of strategies and methods of differentiation to take account of pupil’ learning styles, abilities and previous experiences. 
  • Support pupils with special educational requirements. 
  • Contribute to the development of school policy in relation to behaviour management of pupils. 
  • Work in partnership with colleagues, parents, other specialist agencies and staff in other schools as appropriate. 
  • Be aware and follow the school's policies and procedures, especially those relating to safeguarding and child protection, behaviour and health and safety.

Manor House School is nestled in seventeen acres of magical gardens, woodlands and sports fields that makes our beautiful school a very special place to learn and grow.  The magnificent country house, complemented with state of the art educational facilities, is brought alive by the creative and positive energy of the girls who choose to learn here. We are a selective independent school for girls aged 2-16 years (with boys in the Nursery and Kindergarten), located in the village of Bookham, Surrey. We are members of the Girls Schools Association (GSA) and have an on-site Nursery, Prep Department (Upper and Lower) and Senior School.
