Head of Physics

As William Perkin CE High School enters an exciting time of growth, with our first sixth form intake starting in September 2018, we are seeking a Head of Physics (in charge of Engineering Scholars) to lead our KS5 development team. We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious teacher to join our science and sixth form teams as we seek to create the leading STEM sixth form in Ealing. The post is ideal for someone with excellent planning skills looking to develop their leadership abilities, as the post-holder will be responsible for developing the A-Level curriculum and ensuring outstanding examination outcomes in the curriculum within the Physics department at KS4. 

The new post-holder will also work with our established and experienced science team to ensure that comprehensive wider learning offer is in place for Physics students. This includes the exciting new sixth form offer, the Engineering Scholar programme. The scholar programme has been designed to support our elite scientists in applications for Oxbridge. Whilst a speciality in Engineering is not required for the role, a desire to create an innovative wider learning programme would be conducive to a successful application.

William Perkin has an innovative curriculum model – core subjects including science are taught in the morning in 50-minute periods, and science is studied every day by every student. These lessons cover the academic core, and the style of learning is formally focussed on the acquisition of core content and academic disciplines. The Practical and Creative subject options, known as the Electives, take place in the afternoon. The elective subject areas are Art, Music, Sport, Creative Technologies and the Application of Science. Once a week students have a 100-minute Applied Science session in which they explore the subject in a real world context. The Applied Science electives have been designed to encourage students to understand the practical application of Science and to develop their ability to think both critically and creatively. The goal is for students to gain a genuine sense of the application of the science they study, as well as consolidate their learning in the core syllabus.

The successful candidate will have:

• a good degree and Qualified Teacher Status
• ability to teach Science to KS3 (minimum) and Physics to KS5
• knowledge of the requirements of the National Curriculum
• an understanding of recent curriculum/learning developments
• an understanding of the strategies required to motivate and enthuse all students across the ability range as part of a whole school approach to raising achievement
• an understanding of the processes and techniques required to assess, record and report students’ learning effectively
• ability to be reflective and driven towards self-improvement
