Job overview

Due the retirement of our longstanding, highly respected Head of Department, we are seeking applications from dedicated and hardworking professionals with a desire to work in an extremely successful, happy, well-resourced, exceptional non-selective 11-18 Academy. The role will be to lead Psychology from Key Stage 4 through to Key Stage 5. The possibility to also teach and lead Criminology will also be considered dependent on experience. 

We are looking for applicants who will strive to make a substantial difference to the lives of our students, our school and the wider community. The successful candidate must be experienced, enthusiastic and self-motivated, with strong organisational skills, and ready to play a significant role as Head of Psychology.

You must be:    

  • An outstanding, research informed practitioner with a proven record of raising attainment for students    
  • A confident and competent user of data, able to empower others in its use to support outstanding pedagogy    
  • Able to inspire and challenge every student enabling them to make excellent progress    
  • Able to communicate and enthuse staff and implement ideas

We are a split site, semi-rural, mixed 11-18 non-selective converter academy with approximately 1,520 students, including over 220 students in our Sixth Form. We are situated centrally in Crowborough on the outskirts of the Ashdown Forest, an area of outstanding natural beauty. We are close to Tunbridge Wells and the South Coast. The vast majority of our staff travel to Beacon from a variety of destinations within the South East, including Brighton, Eastbourne, Lewes and Tunbridge Wells.

Beacon Academy takes a leading role in recruiting and training new entrants to the profession.  We invest in our teachers through our Early Career Teacher (ECT) programme and have chosen to partner with UCL and Sussex Schools Alliance for the delivery of the Early Career Framework and with Brighton & Hove Education & Enterprise Marketplace as our Appropriate Body. High quality professional development is a priority, and we have seven Specialist Leaders of Education across a variety of areas on our staff body.

In 2019, Beacon Partnership was selected by the Chartered College, the professional body for teaching, to deliver the prestigious Chartered Teacher (CTeach) Programme in East and West Sussex, Kent and Brighton and Hove.  We are currently supporting several staff on the Chartered College of Teaching Certificate of Evidence Informed Practice and NPQs from UCL Institute of Education in partnership with Sussex Coast Schools Alliance.

We secure excellent outcomes for our students. In 2019 our Progress 8 score was 0.97. As a non-selective, non-denominational, non-fee-paying school, we are immensely proud and delighted to have received this confirmation, once again, of our high-ranking position. We are in an esteemed group of 6% of schools nationally who are now categorised as ‘well above average’ for two years in a row. Context

We are a split site, semi-rural, mixed 11-18 non-selective converter academy with approximately 1630 students, including over 250 students in our Sixth Form. We are situated centrally in Crowborough on the outskirts of the Ashdown Forest, an area of outstanding natural beauty. We are close to Tunbridge Wells and the South Coast. The vast majority of our staff travel to Beacon from a variety of destinations within the South East, including Brighton, Eastbourne, Lewes and Tunbridge Wells. ​

Our catchment area generates our truly non-selective intake, both in terms of ability and socio-economic background. We are an oversubscribed school. We draw students from more than 10 primary schools in Crowborough and the surrounding areas. We also attract applications from an increasing number of students outside of our catchment area, however, due to our oversubscription we are generally only able to offer places to those within our pre-defined community area. ​

Our sixth form provision is accommodated entirely at our Green Lane site, an 800m five-minute walk from our main Beeches site which accommodates years 7-11. We are immensely proud that we retain a high proportion of our Sixth Form students from Beacon Academy as well as recruiting students from other local and international schools.​

We are thrilled to share that our commitment to excellence in education continues to yield outstanding results, as evidenced by our outstanding Progress 8 score for 2023, which stands at 0.43. This achievement underscores our consistent track record of surpassing national averages, reflecting the significant value we add to our students' progress in achieving their final GCSE grades compared to their peers of similar prior ability across the country. For our outcomes in 2019 and 2022, we take immense pride in being recognised as 'well above average' among the top 6% of schools nationally. As a non-selective, non-denominational, non-fee-paying school, this distinction underscores our commitment to providing exceptional education and achieving outstanding results within a diverse and inclusive learning environment.

We are incredibly proud of our Sixth Form students. In 2023, 100% of students who applied to University were successful in meeting the requirements for an offer, with 33% of those students leaving to attend a prestigious Russell Group University.
