Newlands is a successful and over-subscribed girls’ 11-18 comprehensive school with a strong reputation for academic achievement. During our recent Ofsted inspection (October 2018) we were graded as Outstanding.
Our excellent GCSE results put us consistently in the top 10% of schools nationwide. We also have an outstanding success rate at A-Level, with an ALPS score of 3.
The Psychology Department is committed to fostering students’ natural curiosity as to why humans behave and think as they do. Psychology is a very popular A-Level subject at Newlands, with many students going on to read it at university. This is an excellent opportunity for a person with vision and energy to take on the leadership of a department, which is highly valued by our school community.

About Newlands Girls' School
Our school started life in 1905 as Maidenhead Girls’ High School. In 1958, the growing numbers necessitated a move to the current site in Farm Road and, in 1973, a new name - ‘Newlands Girls’ School - heralded the beginning of an inclusive, high-performing centre of excellence. There are now 1,200 pupils on roll enjoying an extensive range of specialist areas, such as the Sports Hall, swimming pool, well-stocked Library, Music Block, Technology Suite and Art/Photography Rooms.
Visitors to our school often remark on the calm, purposeful and happy atmosphere. The diligence of our learners and the recruitment of only the best-qualified and most committed staff ensures the highest academic standards, putting us at the top of local and national league tables.
Pupils at Newlands enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum right from the start of Year 7. At GCSE level (studied in Years 10 and 11), there are 21 subjects and, in the Sixth Form, 26 A-Level and BTEC qualifications.
Pastoral care is provided by Year Heads, Form Tutors, Learning Mentors and a Well-Being Hub. The aim is to support all pupils so that they can fulfil their potential and make excellent progress with their learning.
A wide range of extra-curricular activities gives pupils further opportunities to experience success and try something new. Local trips and visits abroad ensure that horizons can be broadened and different cultures explored.
Parents are highly supportive of the school; the Newlands Parents’ Association is a thriving group, who organise fund-raising events throughout the year.
Teaching at Newlands is a rewarding experience, which is borne out by many members of staff choosing to spend significant parts of their career with us. Plentiful opportunities for professional development mean that the sharing of good practice is embedded into school life, benefitting both teachers and pupils.
The OFSTED team, who inspected us in October 2018, judged the school to be ‘Outstanding’, which is the highest possible outcome. Since then, we have continued to embrace new opportunities and ensure that all members of our community can grow, flourish and achieve great things.
