Job overview

We are looking for a Religious Studies specialist to lead the provision of a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum for pupils throughout the school.

A thriving and successful selective preparatory school for boys in North London, we provide a high calibre education for all of our pupils (approx. 450) from age 4 to 13. We aim to ensure a happy, secure and energetic community in which our pupils and staff can flourish.

We welcome applications from existing and aspiring Heads of Department from across the full range of school settings.

The Hall’s previous Head of Religious Studies says: “I decided to join the teaching profession after completing a gap year teaching English in China, Gansu province. I enjoyed the experience of teaching that year so much that I applied to Kings College in London to complete a PGCE in Religious Studies. I completed two placements in London state secondary schools and worked in the secondary state school system for the next four years. In this time my teaching developed and I involved myself fully in school life including charity events and Saturday sport.

Having just completed my sixth year at the Hall School I have continued to enjoy teaching RS and Philosophy whether it be stories from the Abrahamic traditions or Greek philosophy. I have continued to expand my teaching skills and have developed my ability to engage pupils with the role that religion can play within the world. As a teacher I believe it is important to develop, encourage and stimulate a sense of wonder and respect for the world. I strive to help the boys to develop confidence in their own sense of identity, a willingness to tolerate uncertainty and to acknowledge ambiguity and controversy in the world around them.

One of my favourite elements of teaching at the Hall is the opportunity given to teachers to involve themselves in the wider extra-curricular opportunities offered. I have helped run the debating club for the past four years, headed up charity events as part of my role as a housemaster, run sports teams and taken part in numerous trips. The highlight has been the regular school ski trip to Engelberg in Switzerland over the past three years.”

Closing date: Tuesday 21st November 2017 at midday

The Hall is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment. All checks relevant to the post will be carried out including references and an enhanced DBS check.
