Job overview

King Edward’s Witley’s essence was born of a Christian vision – ‘a place to lodge Christ in’. Christian values and principles are an influence in developing our pupils’ strong sense of moral and spiritual awareness. Religious Education is taught as an academic subject from Year 7 to Year 9. Pupils may opt for GCSE Religious Studies in Year 10. Everyone should have a good understanding of the major world religions and the ethical and philosophical views that are formed alongside these.

As part of our 5th Form Programme, all pupils complete a weekly class in Critical Thinking. Covering topics such as problem solving, ethical reasoning and decision making; this course seeks to prepare learners with a set of skills that will serve as a solid foundation for Sixth Form study and support those pupils who go on to complete the Theory of Knowledge course as part of the IB Diploma programme. The course is not examined, so the successful candidate will have the opportunity to revise the programme of study according to their vision for the department.

In the Sixth Form, Philosophy is currently taught at A Level and may be included in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, according to the demands of each cohort of pupils. RS is available as an A Level option at Sixth Form.

Pupils who study Philosophy develop independent and creative thinking. They formulate arguments in a rational and logical way as they critically examine their own experience and their ideological and cultural biases. They become aware of the plurality of philosophical traditions, ideas and concepts and develop their own thinking as they evaluate different ideas and arguments. They are trained to test hypotheses and interpret data and source material. They will then express the ideas clearly and coherently and be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts, arguments and questions. This course has a focus on epistemology and political philosophy and promotes metacognitive skills, a particular focus within the School.

We seek an innovative, flexible and collaborative Head of Department who will be a visible and respected ‘ambassador’ of King Edward’s School. The successful candidate would be an excellent communicator, inspire confidence, enthusiasm and motivation in Staff and Pupils and demonstrate Christian values and integrity.

In return, as well as job satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment, we can offer a competitive salary, staff fee remission on school fees both at King Edward’s and our partner school Barrow Hills, free car parking, free use of our gym, swimming pool and sports facilities, all meals and snacks on duty and a Cycle to Work Scheme. We currently offer membership of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), if applicable.

Single or family accommodation may also be available at favourable rents.

To apply, please complete the Application Form and for further details, visit our website www.kesw.org or contact the HR Department on hr@kesw.org or telephone 01428 686739.

Closing date for applications: Noon, 23rd May 2022. However, early application is recommended as we reserve the right to interview and appoint prior to the closing date.
