Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a Head of School for our Alternative Provision academy to work closely with the Executive Head Teacher and Senior Leadership of the Federation in leading our all through academy on the next stage of the journey from Good to Outstanding.

The successful candidate will possess strong leadership skills, a clear understanding of statutory guidance and be able to work within systems confidently as well as have the ability to further develop a framework for stakeholder engagement during the negotiation period of new relationships with the Local Authority and other agencies.  The role will also involve securing best outcomes for our learners in terms of accreditation and positive pathways by ensuring that pupils are assessed and provided with the right support to enable them to move forward appropriately, whether this be on to a new school setting or further education, training or employment post-16.

We are looking for a skilled and creative professional who possesses excellent analytical and problem-solving skills alongside the ability to model the highest standards of professionalism and leadership to staff across the school.  Experience in establishing high standards of behaviour, the ability to motivate both staff and pupils and resilience in overcoming barriers are key attributes.

Developing new relationships alongside sustaining and further developing existing ones are key in promoting stakeholder engagement and commitment to best practice.  The post holder will also be expected to fully embed the vision and ethos of the Federation and be an effective delegator in order that the existing staff skills are exploited to their full potential.

This is both an inward and outward facing role which presents many challenges as well as rewards.  It is an opportunity for a successful leader to support the school in its transition to an academy within a wider Trust whilst ensuring the specialisms and strengths of the previous school are not lost but maintained.

This post offers the opportunity for the right candidate to work alongside a strong, cohesive team of leaders who oversee the SEMH schools and AP services for Bexley and to contribute to a vision which is embedded in a culture of social inclusion and equality of offer for the most vulnerable pupils in our borough.

This post is considered to be a customer-facing position; as such it falls within scope of the Code of Practice on English language requirement for public sector workers.  The school  therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016 to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements. The appropriate standards are set out in the person specification. These will be applied during the recruitment/selection and probationary stages.

Interested candidates are welcome to contact the Executive Head Teacher for a discussion about the post.

School Context

Horizons Academy Bexley provides high quality education and support to pupils in Key Stages 1-4, who have been permanently excluded or are at risk of exclusion from their mainstream school. We also provide a short-term provision at our Satellite centre for learners, who are unable to attend school because of a medical need.

We focus on early intervention, offering a range of services from short term respite to longer term education for students in KS4.

Our aim in KS1 – 3 is to re-integrate the learners back into a mainstream or specialist school via our ‘Refocus programme’. We work closely with external agencies and our partner schools to identify the needs of the child, develop the child’s ability to learn, so that each learner feels confident about being in the classroom.

School Vision

At Horizons Academy, we aspire to provide the best possible experience for all of our pupils, which is underpinned by our core values of Relationships, Respect, Resilience and Readiness.

Our aim is to create a positive learning environment, where each pupil feels safe and happy to contribute to the wider school community. All pupils that attend Horizons Academy can expect support to achieve their goals, whether that be towards positive outcomes at the end of Key stage 4 or an opportunity to be re-integrated into a mainstream or specialist setting.

Our curriculum has been developed to focus on English, Maths and Reading, aimed at closing any gaps in knowledge, so that each pupil is prepared for the next stage of the educational journey. We believe that these fundamental skills are essential to helping pupils become well rounded citizens, who are able to productively contribute to the wider community.

Ultimately, we want all learners to feel confident about their future and in their own ability to live a successful, meaningful life.
