Job overview

Harrow College has achieved the third highest 16-18 results in London, the equal-highest in West London, and with great pride at Harrow College our High Needs Student are central to this success.

We deliver high quality education to a large High Needs Student cohort, the majority of which study with high success on mainstream vocational courses. We also have discrete LLDD provision within our Foundation Section.

We are now seeking to appoint a Head of School – Foundation, Learning Support and Art. This exciting and key role at Harrow College will act as strategic lead for Additional Learning Support (including Deaf and Hard of Hearing support), as well as managing the LLDD & Entry level and Art Sections.

You will be housed in the recently opened state of art LLDD ‘Spring House’ building.  Additionally, ALS will soon benefit from the just opened highly specialised ALS Centre, part of a rolling programme of capital development at our Harrow Weald campus. You will lead a Section Manager overseeing the LLDD/Entry Section as well as ALS and Communication teams who are overseen by two experienced Student Co-ordinators. You will also oversee a Course Team Leader for Art.

You will be responsible for driving the College’s ALS strategy, including meeting relevant statutory and Ofsted priorities. You will work with a number of local authorities to ensure we meet the needs of our students through both the quality of our offer and by appropriate funding being agreed to meet these needs.  You will also lead the discrete LLDD & Foundation courses, and the college’s small Art Section.

Qualified to degree level and preferably qualified in SEND, and with an advanced level teaching qualification, you should possess 3 years’ teaching experience in Further Education, have a good understanding of awarding body regulations and curriculum development. You will also have a proven track record of leading ALS and SEND in the education sector.  You should have a range of management skills including good planning and organising abilities, along with excellent communication skills and the ability to lead and motivate teams to enhance student success.

About HRUC - Harrow College

On 1 August 2017 Uxbridge and Harrow Colleges merged to become HCUC. The Colleges are now officially part of the same organisation and will work together to provide the best opportunities to students, but will keep their individual names and campuses. As well as keeping  their current identities each college will continue to run the majority of their current courses for the foreseeable future.

The merger of the two Colleges into a single legal entity has taken place in order to maximise future opportunities for students, employers and local communities, through a combination of preserving current provision, and pooling resources and expertise to develop education and training.

Group Principal and CEO Laraine Smith and Principal and Deputy CEO Pat Carvalho said: “This exciting partnership was identified by both Harrow College and Uxbridge College’s governing bodies as the best way forward for our local communities. Both Colleges are very pleased to be able to maintain their current identities and the bulk of their current courses, as well as to be enhancing provision on an ongoing basis by pooling resources and expertise. We believe this merger will result in a financially resilient and sustainable college group, allowing us to continue to meet the needs of our students, employers and the communities we serve.”

While Uxbridge College and Harrow College will continue to operate as individual Colleges serving their local and regional communities, the Uxbridge College Corporation (the Governing Body), which now oversees the running of both Colleges, has been renamed HCUC to reflect the enlarged remit of serving Uxbridge and Harrow Governors following the 1 August 2017 merger.
