Job overview

Head of School - General Education (AS/A2 Levels) - Torfean Learning Zone - Cwmbran

We have an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest and most successful colleges in Wales. Our results are consistently excellent, with A Level outcomes above the Welsh and UK comparators and the joint best results in Wales for main qualifications.

As part of our development, we will be opening a new campus in June 2020. The Torfaen Learning Zone, is a new £24 million purpose built learning centre that will be the home of all English language post-16 education in Torfaen. The Welsh Baccalaureate and a wide range of complementary level 2 & 3 vocational qualifications will also be available.

The Torfaen Learning Zone replaces three English medium school sixth forms in the Borough of Torfean. It will be managed and run by Coleg Gwent in partnership with the authority and will provide the pathway for learners into higher education, training and employment.

We wish to appoint an experienced manager to lead the development and provision of the AS/A2 Level curriculum in the new centre. This important role will lead the transition of the academic curriculum into the new centre, with responsibility for establishing the newly configured A Level curriculum and delivering an excellent provision.

The role will initially focus on establishing a new teaching team and a new curriculum in readiness for the opening of the new centre in 2020. Beyond 2020, the focus will be on delivering an excellent learner experience, resulting in outstanding outcomes and a high quality provision.

As one of our key managers, you will provide excellent leadership to staff, setting high expectations and standards of behaviour, leading by example as an outstanding role model. You will be dynamic and energetic, with a proven track record in effective team management and an ability to inspire and motivate. You will be able to demonstrate effective and influential people management skills, together with excellent planning and organisation skills, and a good understanding of quality assurance and improvement. You will be an innovative, creative thinker with a background in education, preferably with experience as a teacher and subsequently curriculum manager in an educational environment. You will have a comprehensive understanding of A Level curriculum and a proven track record in delivering high standards and excellent success rates in this area.

In return, the College offers many employment benefits including generous holiday entitlement, pension scheme and many on-site benefits and facilities. You will join a college that is ambitious, purposeful, committed and supportive. Within easy access of the M4 corridor, our campuses are set within reach of some of the most beautiful countryside in South Wales. If you want to make a difference, this is the place to do it.

The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable for this post.

Applications may be submitted in Welsh and will not be treated less favourably than applications submitted in English.

The College is committed to safeguarding, ensuring the safety and welfare of children and young people. Employment is subject to a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service and registration with the Education Workforce Council. Please note that successful candidates will be expected to pay for the Enhanced Disclosure and registration with the Education Workforce Council (EWC).

We particularly welcome applications from under-represented groups including ethnicity, gender, transgender, age, disability, sexual orientation or religion, in line with our Equality Opportunities policy, all campuses are accessible and facilities such as prayer rooms are available.

We are committed to the recruitment and retention of disabled people, and are a Disability Confident Employer.

It is expected that the successful candidate will take up post in September 2019. During the interim period leading up to the opening of the Torfean Learning Zone, the post holder will be based at the Pontypool or Usk campus.
