Job overview

The Governing Body seeks to appoint a Head of School to undertake a significant leadership role in this flourishing school which is both a National Teaching School and a National Support School. The Minster School is recognised by Ofsted “to be of the very highest quality, where all students make outstanding progress”.

We wish to appoint a highly successful teacher and inspirational leader with a proven track record at senior level, excited by the challenge of providing an outstanding education to the young people of Southwell and its surrounding villages. The successful candidate will also be expected to support our wider collaborative work with local partners, contributing to the system leadership of education in the area. The Minster School is in the process of converting to become an academy at the heart of its own multi-academy trust.

The Head of School will work closely with the substantive Head Teacher to ensure the quality of education in all its facets remains outstanding, embracing change with a drive for continuous improvement for the benefit of our students.

The Minster School traces its origins back to the establishment of Southwell Minster in Norman times. We are looking to appoint someone who will proudly build on this tradition and proactively promote and develop the Christian ethos of the school and the partnership with the Cathedral in the education of our students, while maintaining a contemporary view of educational development and pedagogy.

Should candidates wish to make an informal visit to the school please contact Alex Byrne (HR Officer) by email a.byrne@minster.notts.sch.uk or call her on 01636 817343.

Applicants should submit an application form, an experience review and a letter of application outlining their suitability for the post and philosophy of education to Mr Matthew Parris, Head Teacher. A CV will not be considered.

The Minster School is committed to safeguarding children and the promotion of equal opportunities for staff and students. The successful applicant will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check and complete a KCSIE Declaration.

Application form and information pack available on request from The Minster School, Nottingham Road, Southwell, Notts NG25 0LG. Tel; 01636 817343, email recruitment@minster.notts.sch.uk or from the Minster School website on http://www.minster.notts.sch.uk/vacancies/

Closing date: midday on Monday 26th February

Interviews: Thursday 15th March with final candidates invited to return on Friday 16th March

The Minster School is a highly successful secondary school, serving the local community of Southwell and surrounding villages. As a Church of England Academy we have a strong ethos which is based around our values of Wisdom, Optimism, Resilience, Kindness and Service through which we live and breath our motto of Succeeding Together. The school currently has 1600 students on role including 350 students in the sixth form and 40 students in the Junior School. We are oversubscribed and are regularly in the top schools in Nottinghamshire for attainment and progress.

Alongside serving our own students, we are a national support school, the home  school of East Midlands East Maths Hub and lead a Learning Alliance providing Initial Teacher Training, Professional Learning and School Improvement support. The Minster School is also the foundation school in the Minster Trust for Education (MITRE).

The school can trace its origins to 956AD where it provided the education to the choristers of Southwell Minster. Whilst still maintaining its heritage and history the school is now a vibrant and forward-looking academy housed in a state-of-the-art building built in 2007. We are passionate about learning and developing new ways to engage, challenge and support students in their studies.

As a school we believe strongly that students should have a broad and immersive experience throughout their school life. As a result, enrichment remains a key part of our provision. Whether it be our highly anticipated musical productions, sporting success or our wide variety of extra-curricular visits, we believe that learning should flourish beyond the classroom.

At the heart of all that we do is a drive to enable all members of our school community to work together, care for each other and strive to realise their potential in their studies and all other aspects of life.

An extract from our last Ofsted inspection (November 2023):

“The school is very well led and managed. Leaders lead with a strong moral purpose.  They have high expectations of pupils’ learning, attitudes and behaviour. Overwhelmingly, staff say that they are proud to work at the school. They have high  aspirations for all pupils. They are committed to, and make a positive difference in, pupils’ lives.”
