Job overview

Temporary, 12 months

Due to the retirement of our Headteacher the children, staff and Governors of Norfolk Community Primary School are looking to appoint a Head of School on a secondment basis for 12 months.

We offer an exciting opportunity to lead and shape the future of Norfolk Community Primary School. The school is situated not far from the city centre and has the benefit of a relatively new build with a number of ecologically friendly features and large grounds. The highly inclusive nature of the school means that we have a number of children with complex needs. The school works hard to support them and also to raise the aspirations and attainment of all its pupils, encouraging them to be ambitious and develop the behaviours to support those ambitions. There is a strong commitment to a creative curriculum. Norfolk is a vibrant and outward-looking school and you will benefit from experienced leadership and collaborative working within the Sheffield South East Learning Partnership (SSELP).

Our most recent OFSTED inspection (April 2016) rated us as “Requiring Improvement”. Since then we have addressed a number of relevant issues and are recognised by our external advisor and the Local Authority (Learn Sheffield) as being a good school.

Whilst rigorously tackling our Ofsted issues, we have continued to build on our many strengths.

For example:

  • We offer a rich and lively curriculum and are widely recognised for our high quality drama work including working with the national Shakespeare in Schools programme.
  • Our Early Years provision is very strong and we are a DfE “Championship School” for 2 year FEL provision. “Children make a flying start to learning and are prepared well for Year 1”. (OFSTED 2016)
  • We are a key school in SSELP and lead on the multi-disciplinary Early Help and Support programme to improve emotional and mental health across the SSELP.
  • We have a keen and effective senior leadership team and supportive Governors
  • We have a positive teaching team who have benefitted from high quality professional development, and a large inclusion team, all prepared to “go the extra mile” for the children and school.

We are therefore looking for an inspirational and empathetic Head of School who

  • will work well with pupils, parents, staff and governors
  • will continue to work with the Senior Leadership Team to implement and develop the changes necessary to make the school “Good” or better in the eyes of OFSTED
  • is able to demonstrate first-hand experience of senior management and leadership roles
  • has the ability to achieve high standards and ensure rapid pupil progress.
  • is experienced in managing staff and challenging them to achieve ambitious targets
  • has a clear understanding of the use of current data and related information and its usage in exploring and making changes
  • will focus on areas of continuous improvement
  • is resourceful and able to attract additional benefits for the school
  • will contribute to the collaborative working of all schools in the Locality (SSELP) www.sselp.net
  • is an innovative problem solver
