Job overview

Head of Science

Accrington Academy is a popular, successful and oversubscribed school. Due to the popularity and success of this subject at Key Stage 4 and 5, we are now looking to grow the department and welcome applications for the exciting position of Head of Science.  The academy currently offers a full range of courses, including Additional, Triple, BTEC and A-level, run within the department. As a result of demand in Science we have recently added a £750,000 Science block extension to our already outstanding facilities.

As Head of Department you will join our Middle Leadership Team and take responsibility for standards in Science working alongside a talented and forward thinking team.

We will appoint a consistently very good to outstanding teacher of Science who achieves excellent results for progress and attainment with her/his classes.

We are looking for:

• Someone who is passionate about Science and who will inspire our students to be so as well.

• Perfected skills, in securing outstanding progress and attainment with all groups, particularly at KS3 and KS4.

• Someone who shares our moral purpose of ensuring that all of our young people receive the best education possible in a supportive environment from people who care about them.

 • Evidence of good to outstanding teaching and results.

 • Excellent leadership skills and competencies.

As a Group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. Our academies each have at least eight INSET days per year (with three of those solely dedicated to planning), and an ongoing group-wide wellbeing programme. It's an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’.

We are a popular, vibrant and successful 11-18, non-selective school. Our motto as part of the UL family of academies is “The Best in Everyone”.

In March 2015 OFSTED identified that we were a ‘good’ school. The cornerstone of our success is that students enjoy school.  “Students’ attitudes to learning are positive. Students want to do well at the academy”.  – OFSTED MARCH 2015

We have developed a culture of “hard work” and “dedication” from our students and staff alike, where high expectations and a desire for success are standard and everyone is proud to belong to Accrington Academy.

We believe that everyone at the academy can be outstanding and we seek to draw out the full potential in everyone. We do this by instilling the following values in all our students:

  • Ambition
  • Determination to succeed
  • Respect for others, ourselves and the environment we live and work in
  • Enthusiasm
  • Confidence
  • Creativity
