Job overview

We seek to appoint a full-time, well-qualified, enthusiastic graduate of Science as Head of Department from September 2022. The post arises as a result of the retirement of the current postholder. This is a rare opportunity to lead the largest and one of the most successful departments in the only fully IB school in a South East London borough, a grammar school with a reputation for excellence.

As you would expect, Science at Bexley Grammar has a high profile across the school. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and work with well-motivated and intelligent young scientists, a number of whom progress to embark on a medical course at University. The Science department is large and housed in suites of specialist labs. It achieves excellent results on a routine basis under the current leadership of a well-established Head of Department, a second in department and Key Stage leaders.

Science is taught in years 7 and 8 before students continue with separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics from year 9 through to GCSE taught by subject specialists. All students (over 420 across Year 12 and 13) study at least one Science subject in the Sixth Form as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Candidates with ability/experience in teaching A level in one or more of the sciences will find themselves at home in the IB classroom.

The Science Department consists of 14 full-time and part-time members of staff.  All of our colleagues teach from Year 7 through to Higher IB. The successful candidate will be able to deliver one or more of the sciences  to Higher IB and Oxbridge entrance level. The Department has a highly collegiate and supportive atmosphere.

Bexley Grammar School is an oversubscribed, high achieving, coeducational selective school with Academy Status.  As an IB world school with excellent resources, a thriving Sixth Form, Specialist College Status in Science, Mathematics and Languages, and a wealth of extra-curricular activities, this school provides an exciting and enriching educational experience for all.

Further details about the school and an application form are available on the school website (www.bexleygs.co.uk).

Closing date for applications is noon on Tuesday 25th January 2022. It is anticipated that interviews will take place in the week commencing Monday 31st January.

Bexley Grammar School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

This post is considered to be a customer-facing position; as such it falls within scope of the Code of Practice on English language requirement for public sector workers.  The school therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016 to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements. The appropriate standards are set out in the person specification. These will be applied during the recruitment/selection and probationary stages.

About Bexley Grammar School

Everyone who visits BGS notices the warmth of the relationships between students and staff in a vibrant community.

Bexley Grammar School is an oversubscribed, high achieving, coeducational selective school, rated as 'Outstanding' by Ofsted in October 2022. We stretch our students with a challenging curriculum including two foreign languages and all three separate sciences at GCSE. We raise aspirations, grow confidence and develop young people into compassionate leaders. Our school motto translates as “to strive for excellence”.

About 50% of our students are non White British and over 20% have a first language other than English as their mother tongue. Although our pupil premium numbers are low compared to national averages they are high compared to other grammar schools and our school deprivation indicator puts us above the 40th percentile for all schools nationally.

We all learn best when we are happy, safe, busy, inspired and valued as individuals; every student is encouraged to choose from a startling array of extra-curricular activities, many of them rooted in our vibrant and competitive house system. These activities help students develop as individuals and as members of teams; they also provide numerous opportunities for leadership.  We participate in World Challenge, Young Enterprise, the Jack Petchey Award and numerous other initiatives; our Language Leaders and Sports Leaders work with primary school children; there are clubs for everything from cheerleading to chess or from STEM club to Archery and if something is missing, students are encouraged and supported to start it.

There is a full programme of sports fixtures, concerts and plays during the year, an art exhibition and the annual musical production of near West End quality. A typical academic year clocks up about seventy day visits run by all subject areas in addition to a wide range of residential trips both in the UK and all over the world - typically 20 overseas trips in a given academic year.

Most students continue into our thriving Sixth Form, which plays a key role in leading the rest of the student body.  All students follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) in the Sixth Form. The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a full and well-balanced course which develops independence and depth of learning while nurturing the personal qualities needed for success at university and in a career. Our IB students gain places at top universities, including the highest rate of Oxford and Cambridge entry of any school in the London Borough of Bexley.
