Head of Science Department (replacement contract for 12 months) – Secondary School Science Teacher (Year 7 – 12)

St. Mary's Coptic Orthodox College is a thriving, contemporary learning community committed to attaining outstanding academic achievement and upholding the teachings and traditions of the Coptic Orthodox Church. Located in Melbourne's northern suburb of Coolaroo, SMCOC officially opened in 1991 and has grown and evolved into a flourishing independent, co-educational setting with over 100 staff and over 800 students from Foundation to 12.

The Head of Science Department will be a visionary educator, who is responsible for leadership and management of the department. They will keep abreast of research in learning, assessment and teaching, including approaches, pedagogy, student engagement, learning theory and knowledge. The Head of Science Department will work actively to build a collegial team of staff within the department and will promote the learning area within the College community of students, parents and staff.

The successful candidate is a leader with demonstrated ability and interest in curriculum and assessment development, confidence with and strong knowledge of ACARA and VCAA processes and regulations. They also need to possess comprehensive pedagogical ability to meet the needs of learners of all abilities and in all subjects in Humanities Department.

Key Areas of Responsibility

The ideal candidate will:

  • actively and positively support the Coptic Orthodox Christian ethos and SMCOC’s vision, mission and values;
  • hold qualifications appropriate for the position, *post graduate qualifications would be looked upon favourably;
  • has demonstrated experiences in teaching VCE Biology;
  • be a pedagogical leader able to inspire others to stretch, refine and develop their curriculum planning, assessment and reporting and their teaching practices to enhance student learning irrespective of subject area;
  • articulate a clear vision, congruent with SMCOC’s strategic intent, for a vibrant and robust Science curriculum;
  • lead others in working towards an enactment of this vision;
  • have a strong working knowledge and understanding of VCAA guidelines and processes and ACARA requirements;
  • be a strong and effective communicator, with the ability to develop positive relationships with all stakeholders;
  • have a demonstrated ability to differentiate curriculum to meet the needs of individual learners;
  • have highly developed and innovative technological skills, particularly in relation to the utilisation of data to inform best practice in teaching and learning;
  • be experienced and skilled in working as part of a team with a diversity of personnel, and equipped to lead others in achievement of shared goals – particularly in relation to the development of an exceptional teaching and learning culture at SMCOC; and
  • possess strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills and have a good working understanding and appreciation of restorative practices.

This position is a full-time maternity leave replacement contract for 12 months, to commence Term 1 2022.

Selection Process

The interview panel will review applications and determine a short list. Non successful candidates will be advised via email once the interview process has been completed and the successful candidate appointed.
