Job overview

Are you looking to further your career in a friendly and vibrant rural school?  We are seeking to recruit a dynamic and motivated Head of Subject (Science) who is able to provide the vision and strategic leadership for our excellent science department.  You will join a team of ambitious middle leaders who are committed to providing an outstanding educational experience for all our students.

As members of the Teacher Development Trust, Uplands is a college that is committed to staff development, where individual needs are supported through a variety of development opportunities including formal and informal workshops, coaching sessions and lesson study.  The Heads of Subject work closely with their Faculty Lead Practitioner to develop the staff within their team.  They play a key role in facilitating the CPD of the teachers in their teams and the ideal candidate will be able to inspire and motivate others.

Uplands Community College is a few miles outside Tunbridge Wells and on the main line from London by rail.  It is within 17 miles of the Sussex coast and Maidstone and a 50-minute commute from South London by car.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our students and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment, in line with our policies and procedures.  Appointment will be subject to an enhanced DBS clearance and we will request references before interview.

The successful candidate will be required to confirm their higher education qualifications and complete a questionnaire regarding his or her health record.

General job descriptions for Head of Subject and Form Tutor are included in the application pack, but it is Uplands’ practice to negotiate other areas individually after appointment to reflect the interest and skills of the successful candidate.  Applicants should also expect to be a Form Tutor and be aware that, at Uplands, appointments are made of teachers committed to the personal development of students, rather than simply demonstrating a specialist expertise.

We are a mixed 11–18 non-selective converter academy with approximately 835 students. Uplands Academy converted to an Academy in September 2022 and became a member of the MARK Education Trust (formerly Beacon Community College Academy Trust). The acronym MARK was selected because staff who work in the trust are motivated, ambitious, resourceful, and knowledgeable. This partnership will provide many exciting opportunities for professional development, and the sharing of good practice across the two schools. This is the start of a new era for Uplands and an excellent time to join our thriving rural school.

We work meticulously to secure a culture of unapologetically high expectations that are underpinned by our collective, uncompromising belief and ambition for the students of Uplands Academy, and for the experienced, loyal, highly skilled and highly effective team of staff that teach them, allowing teachers to teach and students to learn. The Academy is committed to the development of both its staff and students.

At Uplands Academy, the relationships between our staff and our students are excellent and ones that we are proud of. Our staff have high expectations, are ambitious for our students, and they know them well. We pride ourselves on our rigorous focus on the child as a unique individual, including our most disadvantaged and those with SEND. We ensure that the lessons that our students receive are personalised and inclusive, enabling them to be actively engaged in their learning.   We want our children to be happy, successful, and confident by providing the best possible education for all our students. We want to be an exceptional educational establishment for our community.
