Nigeria

Nigeria has a tough reputation in the outside world.  Conventional wisdom focuses on the grave crime statistics, the high incidence of fraud and the sometimes fraught diplomatic relations with other countries.  However, many regard Nigeria as a well kept secret and it is certainly not unusual for expatriate families in all industries to request extensions to their assignments.  This position will provide an exciting professional challenge and unique living experience.

All candidates must be fully qualified teachers with leadership experience, see description above.

Just two simple steps...

  • Sign up to www.teacherhorizons.com - it takes 2 minutes to add your key details and CV.  Once you have completed this step you are able to access more information about the school and benefits package on offer.

Nigeria and the Port Harcourt area

Nigeria is a very large West African country. Port Harcourt is situated in the south of the country. It is a large industrial town situated in the Delta Region. The region has undergone rapid expansion in the last 20 years, mainly as result of the oil industry. The climate is tropical and varies from warm to very hot! It rains frequently; this can keep the temperature down and, when severe, can impact on movement around the town.

Communication is good and improving. It is entirely possible to obtain a good Skype connection from a laptop or tablet. There are several internet and mobile network providers. A wide range of electrical goods are available locally at a reasonable cost. Bartering in the smaller shops is expected. It is always good to go with a benchmark!

All basic food requirements can be met. Imported foods tend to be more expensive. There are several supermarkets to choose from and a recently- built shopping mall. Fresh vegetables and fruit are always available. As is common in this part of the world, tap water is not for consumption.

Bottled water is very easy to obtain. The local beer is very drinkable and wine and spirits are widely available at moderate cost e.g. a crate of local beer is around £8 and wine from around £4 a bottle.

There are several decent places to eat including good Chinese, Indian and Lebanese restaurants. There is a well-maintained swimming pool at the school and several gyms to choose from. There is also a golf course, which has international members. There are three cinemas and recent DVDs are easily obtainable.
