Job overview

Cokethorpe is an independent day school providing education to boys and girls from the age of four to eighteen. Situated in 150 acres of beautiful parkland just ten miles outside Oxford, the School has a strong reputation for providing a rigorous, broad curriculum underpinned by a firm belief in the principles of a liberal education, and a knowledge that all pupils have the capacity for excellence if encouraged to be ambitious and take responsibility for their learning.

The Sixth Form at Cokethorpe is approximately 150 students strong. Students enjoy access to a purpose-built Sixth Form Centre and make good use of the Common Room Library as a place of study. The Sixth Form is divided into six Houses, with students expected to take a leadership role in supporting younger years and in organising entries to the many tightly-contested House competitions that take place throughout the year. Within each House, there are two Form groups, each containing both Upper and Lower Sixth students, overseen by a Tutor who provides academic and pastoral guidance as appropriate. There are currently two Deputy Heads of Sixth Form who work closely with the Head of Sixth Form and the Tutor team to ensure that the Sixth Form is a positive, productive environment in which students can thrive.

Most Sixth Form students take three A Levels and pursue the EPQ alongside them. There are some who take four A Levels. The School also offers the Business Extended Diploma BTEC programme for a small group of students. The vast majority of students progress from Cokethorpe to University. The School encourages students to be ambitious both in their studies and also in their aspirations, and a strategic objective is to increase the number of successful applications to Oxbridge and highly competitive courses. Students are expected to take part in the Games programme, and are encouraged to take a lead in working with younger years through the AOB extra-curricular programme. A number of students are involved in partnership work with local Primary Schools as part of the Corinthian Partnership. An increasing number of students take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

The School has a strong extra-curricular programme and, whilst excellence in the classroom is paramount, all members of the Common Room are encouraged to see themselves as playing a role in the wider curriculum. It is a busy, purposeful school in which positive relations develop and exciting and varied opportunities arise.

Deadline for applications: Midday Wednesday 19 February.

First Round of interviews on Wednesday 26 February.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked back for further interviews on Wednesday 4 March.

About Cokethorpe School

Cokethorpe is an independent, day school for boys and girls aged four to eighteen, set in 150 acres of glorious Oxfordshire parkland, just two miles south of Witney and ten miles to the west of Oxford.

The School is unique in many ways; not only is our setting unsurpassed but we are also one of the only co-educational day schools in Oxfordshire with both Prep and Senior schools on the same site.

At the heart of our School is the belief that our pupils dig deeper, reach higher, and stretch further when they feel the embrace of supportive peers and the oversight of enthusiastic and experienced teachers who know when and how to challenge them. This sense of community is fostered by the close-knit House system where young people develop a deep sense of belonging; it is forged around the close, working relationship of the small classrooms, where teachers engage the intellect, encourage students to grapple with ideas, and teach lifelong respect and humility.

We are a happy, strong and vibrant community, in which individuals are generous of spirit, inspire friendship and support one another. Our teachers, pupils and parents value the School's small class sizes and emphasis on delivering liberal educational principles in an environment that celebrates individual achievements equally, whatever their passions might be.
