Part-time, three days per week
Winchester College seeks to appoint a violinist as Head of Strings to lead and direct the teaching of stringed instruments at the College; to coach string chamber music; to act as Leader (Concertmaster) of the Winchester College Symphony Orchestra; and to contribute to the general work of the music department.
Music has been central to life at Winchester ever since its foundation in 1382 when William of Wykeham made provision for 16 choirboys, Quiristers, who still provide the treble line for the Chapel Choir. Former Directors of Music include Thomas Weelkes, Jeremiah Clarke, Samuel Sebastian Wesley and Sir George Dyson. The Music Department is now one of the leading departments in the country. There are currently around 20 string players at post-Grade 8/diploma level in the College.
The successful candidate will be an outstanding violinist with extensive performing and teaching experience, who can demonstrate enthusiasm for sharing their musical experience with young people of all abilities. It is hoped that the appointee will wish to maintain an active professional performance schedule alongside their responsibilities to the College.
This is a part-time position, three days per week (Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays) plus weekend concerts as agreed with the Master of Music.
